Hey there
I just got myself a new laptop. It's a Dell, and is mostly a silver finish. The finish doesn't scratch easily, but I'm finding my medical allert bracellette does move against it. I'm trying to find a giant sticker like thing that I could put on my laptop to protect it from getting scratched from bracelettes or watches, etc. I've found them for Mac's but not for PC's, anyone know of someone who sells something like that?

I don't know a solution to your scratch problem. But I wanted to say that I hope you have more luck with your Dell laptop than I had with mine.

I bought one of their laptops back in October 2002. I picked the components myself and chose high end (ie: Pricey) stuff because I wanted a computer that was going to meet my needs for computer graphics. The purpose behind getting a laptop was so I could take it to work with me and use it on my breaks. But I found that I couldn't get used to the tiny print on the screen or the keyboard. So from October 2002 until August 2004 the computer sat in it's case except for about 12 times.

In August 2004 I got seriously sick and set up the laptop by the couch so I could still use the computer. In time I got used to the screen resolution and the keyboard and decided I enjoyed the computer and I was noticing far better colours etc than on my desktop.

I used the computer as my primary computer for a total of 18 months from August 2004 until April 2006. In April 2006 the motherboard failed on it. 5 months after my hardware warranty expired. That's the most expensive component of the computer and to repair it was going to cost more than $700.00!!!

I have been writing to Dell since May trying to get this problem rectified because I don't feel that a $4,500.00 computer should only last through 18 months of regular use (keep in mind that it was only used about 12 times before that). I didn't get a response of any kind from Dell to my letters which I faxed twice and also mailed.

Last week I was feeling a bit more energetic and decided to call and work my way up the food chain there until I talked to someone in authority who could help me. In my quest I found that there are a number rude and arrogant people working there, and some liars too (one girl insisted that she didn't have a supervisor or manager. I told her that unless her name was Michael Dell, that she had a supervisor or manager).

On Friday I finally talked to someone there who agreed with me and bumped me up several levels to a department that deals with situations such as mine. Since Monday I have been in talks with a fellow who is in a position to help me, or so it seems. Right now he's at the gathering of information stage I guess trying to determine if I was using the computer improperly that may have contributed to the early burn out of the main computer component.

I do know that if they rule "no" to a warranty repair, that I'm not done with them. I will seek out the media and tell them that Dell computers are disposable.

I hope you bought an extended warranty on your computer because I've done some investigating and at least 2 others on a different forum that I post on had their motherboard fail on them either just before or just after their 3 year warranty ran out.

well, so far so good on the laptop. I looked into Consumer reports and it was pretty even with the other top laptops out there. Unfortunately laptops just aren't as durable as desktops are, period. I once had a friend who bought a refurbished laptop (don't remember the brand) that had a faulty keyboard and would put "t"'s and ";"'s between each letter...so she would have to go back over everything she wrote and delete in between
I did get the extended warrenty (3 years tech support, 3 years return to deopt and 3 years "complete care" which covers accidents like dropping it or an explosive Dr Pepper). I think warrenties are really important with laptops.

Ok, don't laugh.....well, ok, you can laugh...just don't tell me about it

I like cooking and baking and whatnot, and look up oodles of recipes online, and have a place in the kitchen for the laptop. While it's in the kitchen, I cover the screen and keyboard with a piece of clear saran wrap. (Make sure not to cover the vent holes, stuff'll burn up
) Aside from keeping the flour and other ingredients out of the keys, it's also kept it from getting scratched or dinged too badly.

However, if you were to cling-wrap your laptop on a plane, you might get some weird looks.......

When I had WiFi and and a laptop I did the same thing. It worked really well when I was cooking!

Here... or There... Hmmm
Find a vinyl guy in your area to make one for the laptop! (basically a super sticky sticker) That will be a thick enough barrier to make it not scratch! A lot of small car places (Like family run) have someone that makes custom vinyl graphics.(like the racing stripes on cars) Good luck!!
