I have read to not give certain medications to cats that are hypersensitive. But how can you tell if they are hypersensitive, to begin with, before administering these drugs?
Also, has anyone ever heard of a cat dying after being given the medication tetracycline?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've never heard of a cat dying after being given tetracycline. Then again, I've not heard of a cat being prescribed tetracycline.

A hypersensitivity is basically an allergy. It's a standard warning, but it's kind of silly because anyone with sense would know that if their cat had an allergic reaction to a drug then the cat should not take the drug again. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives and facial swelling, pretty much like what you'd see in a person.

That's why I'm asking because I have never had a cat have an allergic reaction to a drug before and excuse me but I do have "sense" and I am insulted by that remark.

The reason I'm asking is that one of my cats was ill and I gave him this antiobiotic and he had NO reaction to it that day. Had he shown any reaction I WOULD have stopped and called the vet. The next morning I gave him his medication and returned minutes later and found him dead. The vet says that the med was not the cause of his death. He believes he died of sudden heart failure. But I'm still looking for answers.

I just want to know if anyone here has ever had a bad experience with this medication, that's all.

Thanks Pami for your reply.
I have so many questions and so few answers. This was so sudden and unexpected and I'm taking it really hard.

Dear God honey, that must have been horrible for you. Sorry headbuts and sad, tearful licks from KittenKiya's Clan.

It is highly unlikely that an antibiotic could have caused such a result. If it had been the antibiotic and your cat was allergic, there would have been an immediate reaction. Not a day later.

Honey, I am so sorry. Are you having a necropsy done? Darn, this hurts. More loving headbuts and sorry licks.

KittenKiya, thank you also.

No, I did not have an autopsy done. This happened quite a few weeks ago and he has since been cremated and is back home. I'm sorry now that I did not have one done because I'd have some definite answers to ease my mind.

This isn't getting any easier to accept, I miss my baby so much and the events of that day keep boiling back up. I quess it's because I'm going through the guilty stage of what I could, should or shouldn't have done.

I'm so sorry.
I had a feeling when I read your question that you were going throuth the woulda, coulda, shouldas. I know it's easy for me to say this since it isn't my cat but try not to torture yourself like that.

Oh my dear I am very sadden to read your post
.........it must have been such a shock

Its understandable that you´ll have lots of questions and the "what ifs" will bother you.
You did your best, when your kitty was ill you took him to the vets, you gave him his meds..........you loved and cared for him
I have no answers for you either........it would be rather strange that an anti-biotic would have such an effect

So heres sending lots of warm and comforting {{{{{ vibes }}}}} to you, please dont taunt yourself, somethings in life just cannot be explained

RIP little one, run and play with your new fur-family over the Bridge
