We just lost a family cat, Callie, to kidney failure (probably cancer). The Bengal (female) that we have has since become depressed. Two days ago, she started to refuse to eat and so I took her to our vet. She is on antibiotics for possible Toxoplasmosis. We have had to force feed her and she had to be hydrated. She threw up last night and had diarhea. She's only 7 year's old. What is the usual prognosis for this? Thanks.

Why do you think this? Shouldn't we try to give the antibiotics time to work?

Vomitting and diarea can cause dehydration rapidly and THE VET should be at least notified

If she had been re-hydrated, she just lost all that fluid again. Is it possible that the meds are making her sick?

You really need to call the vet and let him/her know what is happening.

The vet wasn't absolutely sure it is toxo. However, our Bengal is refusing to eat and drink and is lethargic. Apparently, she misses Callie, which caused her to become depressed and then it was time for her yearly shots which weakened her immune system. Thank you all so much for caring. I will contact our Vet today with an update.

If you're still having to force her to drink, try Pedilyte instead of just plain water. It will help hydrate her faster.
Other things you might try to stimulate her appetite are, boiled chicken (no bones), seared beef tips (bloody), a good fresh cut of raw yellow fin tuna (just to get her to eat, don't feed alot).

Ask your Vet for a pill that stimulates appetite. It's called Cyproheptadine.
Dosage is 4 mg.

Ask your Vet to do a fecal exam and check for intestinal parasites. Coccidia and Tri-Trich Feotus are the ones to look for. If your cats immune system is down, these nasty buggers can really reek some havoc.

Good luck, I hope your kitty feels better soon.

I am happy to report that our Bengal is almost at 100%. She was, indeed, extremely dehydrated and I admitted her to the animal hospital for two nights. She had a severe bacterial infection and was given antibiotics and fluids via an IV. Thank you all, again, for being so caring.
