First of all hello to all. This is my first post. I was hoping someone could give me some advise on my oldest friend. He is a big white and ginger Tom who is twenty years old. He has been through a nasty ordeal lately after being hit by a car. He had a very poorly leg which we thought we may lose at one point but amazingly he has made a full recovery.

The problem is I am reluctant to let him go outside again as he gave me such a fright. He is a very sociable fellow and like to visit his friends. Since becoming a house cat he has seemed restless and unsettled despite his age. He plays fetch with a tinfoil ball and likes to play chase the torchlight. This helps him settle but I wonder if I will end up giving him a heart attack. Is it normal for such an old fellow to be behaving like a young buck. I want to make sure his last days are happy but his eyes and ears aren't as sharp as they used to be and I don't want to risk another accident. Anyone else had this problem.

First of all, welcome!

I'm glad your boy seems to have healed nicely after his accident. If he were mine, his days of going outside would be over. You said it yourself:

He may cry to go out, but he'll get used to being an indoor only kitty. I really wouldn't worry about him having a heart attack because he's so playful. He sounds like a sweetheart; you're lucky to have such an energetic old-timer

My old boy is 17 1/2 and enjoys going outside too. He doesn't go to far from the house-perhaps 100 feet at the most. He jumps on the kitchen counter and enjoys sitting in one window in the garage too. Perhaps you could let him outside for a few minutes with supervision?? Sometimes it seems they just want a bit of fresh air and to roll around in the grass or the garden or check the smells on the shrubs!!
