Something from todays STAR. (Malaysia's most widely read English newspaper)

Quote:

SHOW CAT'S OWNER SUES AIRLINE FOR MISSING CLAWS

Hong Kong : The owner of an award winning persian cat is suing Hong Kong's flag carrier Cathay Pacific after the pet was found bleeding with nine claws missing before boarding a Malaysia-bound flight, a media report said yesterday.

Grace Cheung Kei is seeking HK$45,000.00 (RM21,096.00) in compensation from the airline, which she contends is responsible for the injuries to Sharamka Jemma, the South China Morning Post reported.

"Jemma is not a usual cat," Cheung wrote in her claim filed at the small claims court, arguing the animal had won a top prize here and other awards in various international cat shows.

"You may not be able to imagine how painful it would be if nine out of ten finger nails are pulled out, but this poor little cat had this horrible experience just days ago," she reportedly said in her claim.

"I could not imagine how this could happen in an airline which claims to be the best airline in the world," the claim reportedly added.

The report said that the incident happened in July when Cheung took the animal and four other cats to the airline check-in counter for a flight to Kuala Lumpur where they were to be entered in a show.

What do you think?

The cat arrived Malaysia bloody - that is for sure! And proceeded to BIS in almost every ring for the next two days in Asia's 1st ever 8 ring show! Now in an untouchable No.1 PR, DW position.

FYI - HK$45,000 is aound US$6,500.

I don't show or breed cats but I can't believe she went ahead and showed that poor cat. Cats hide pain well but it had to be in a lot of pain and it seems cruel to me to add the stress of being around a lot of strange cats and people to be shown.

According to the CFA, cats cannot be shown without claws so these must not be CFA sanctioned. Poor kitty, anyway.

It was a CFA sanctioned show and the cat did have claws - but I believe that the nails may have been clipped down to the pink - thus the blood. I didn't inspect the cat myself and I do know the owner, there is NO WAY the cat would have been declawed before a show!

I can tell you the airline employees did not de-claw the cat. If they had tried there would have been much more blood spilled than the cats. The people coming out on the losing side I would suspect.
The likely scenarios are, that an airline employee clipped the cats nails too close to the quick and they bled, or the cat simply freaked out in the carrier in the cargo hold and injured it's claws attempting to free itself.
Either way I guess it's a judgement call on the owners part about the severity of the claw wounds and the demeaner of the cat, whether to go on with the show or not.
One thing to keep in mind, is that we who show cats take great offense to anyone mishandling our cats in the slightest way, so sometimes even small things get blown out of proportion. My wife and I would have a fit if an airline employee tried to clip our cats nails or do anything else, other than what they are paid to do...........which is safely transport the cat from one destination to the other.

I don't think that only people who show cats feel that way! I'd be PO'd too!

If the airline did something to the cat to cause this problem then yeah I think that they should pay for thier mistake. But if it were the cat's fault (for example maybe it got scared and injured itself trying to escape?) then I don't think that the airline should be responsible for that. Either way I hope that they kitty makes a speedy recovery.

All I can say is poor kitty. I can't imagine someone showing their cat if it had this kind of experience. Missing one show to make sure it was ok isnt unreasonable and its the owners responsibility to care for the baby! Regardless of who is to blame for what happend to the cat, an owner has a responsibility to put the cat's health first.

I find the article highly suspect. I think the STAR has about as good a rep as the National Enquirer?

Anyhoo, if it does happen to be true, very disturbing. But I don't believe too much of what I read in those rags, especially the extremely outrageous stuff.
