I'm really worried about Dorian. He just can't gain any weight, or keep it on. In Feb when he was neutered, her weighted in at 3.8 lbs.
He eventually gained weight to hit almost 8 lbs. I started feeding meals 2x a day 2 months ago as he eats with two other kitties who need two different foods. He started loosing weight. I dewormed them as they all had worms. I started him on Nutri-Cal about 2-3 weeks ago & he hasn't gained any weight, at least it looks like he hasn't. He looks like the "underweight" category when you look at posters in the vets office.

Would it be stupid of me to take him to the vet(I'm sure I'll be making an appt. tomorrow morning, I just want to be assured I'm not being a nutball)? Should I try feeding him kitten food? I think he's dropped to around 5 lbs. He eats a TON(for a cat his size)...canned & dry. Always cleaning up after others. He's had a chronic cold that no vet can seem to find a reason for & that comes & goes when it gets cold. He's a petite cat, I just think he looks thin. I can see his hip bones & his stomach sticks in, but no ribs or anything show.

Could the free feeding be causing him to loose weight?

PLEASE VET check him ... have his thyroid and kindeys been checked ???

If memory serves he is a kitten still so kitten food might help....

How old is he? Having bloodwork to check his kidneys and thyroid is a good idea, especially if he is older than 7 years. In addition, have the vet check his teeth--dental problems can often cause weight loss but that is usually the result of not eating.

My Zeus is sorta like that, he's smaller than kitties who are a couple months younger than him, but he doesn't look unhealthily thin, just very slender, he is Ismene's brother and she was a very tiny cat, so I think the smallness runs in the family, although Antigone, Pandora and Demeter all make up for his slimness in their, uh, not-so-slimness
Sorry to hear about his chronic cold, both Orion and Athena have this problem too, Orion's will clear up on anti-biotics, but will come back within a week of him being done with them and Athena will not stop wheezing!! almost 3 weeks of anti-biotics and so improvement... they both eat and play fine, just sneeze alot
Hope you can find out what's wrong with your boyfriend!!

Dory was born April 1, 2005. He is technically a year & a half, so I have had him on adult food since he turned a year old. Never had nay bloodwork done except for a FeLV test(-). Vets office will be my first call tomorrow....I checked his teeth as that was my first guess....they look good. I'll have to hope that the vet's office will let me pay as I can....I don't have the extra $50 for the bloodwork until after Thanksgiving well. Dang.....I need another special needs cat.

I should see if the vet will give me a deal if I bring in 5 cats for bloodwork at once.
