Tonks was neutered on Friday morning and was doing great on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. This morning, as far as I can tell, he's in some discomfort. He's been breathing very shallowly and rapidly (but not panting) for about an hour now, and he only ate about half of his breakfast. I think his incisions are hurting him, as when I tried to see if he'd licked them open he cried and tried to bite me. (They haven't opened, incidentally.) Any advice on what to do? He seems fine other than the breathing, and hopefully I'm just being paranoid.

I don't like the sound of that. Usually a male cat has recovered within 24 hours, and isn't experiencing pain. Have you checked for a fever (rectally)? He may be developing a respiratory infection, or another infection, and really needs to be checked out by a vet.

Absolutely. Call and check with your vet. This is not normal. He may need pain meds.

I don't like the sound of that either, I would phone your vet.

Radar was neutered and had his umbilical hernia op last Tuesday, he has 5 stitches down his tummy as well as 2 layers of dissolving stitches underneath as they had to cut right through to his intestines, and he was back to his usual self on Wednesday, he's not shown any discomfort from either operation, and it was a good deal more invasive than just neutering.

Sounds like your boy needs to be checked by the vet.

Thanks for your suggestions. We just got back and they ruled out infection and (barring something the radiologist would catch that the emergency clinic workers missed) asthma. What seems most likely is that he licked himself into swollen painfulness, so they gave us some pain meds and one of those big funny collars. He's hating the collar but seems to be doing much better otherwise.

Thanks again!

That's a relief! I'm happy for you that it wasn't infected, just inflamed. Here's hoping for speedy healing!

Thank you for the update! Poor baby. They really hate the E-collars, but if it keeps him from licking, it's worth it.
