Pick one thing you can't imagine having Thanksgiving Dinner without

For me, it's this cranberry sauce..the first one I've ever liked, and I have to have it every year.

12 oz. fresh cranberries
1/4-1/3 cup real maple syrup
grated rind and juice of one orange
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamon

Wash and drain cranberries. Remove any soft or discolored berries and any leaves or stems.

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan and cook on medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring, until the cranberries have popped, and the sauce is thick.

Serve hot or cold.

ps...this is what I do instead of going to bed at a sensible hour..browse tcs

"Grandma Buns".. sounds funny (
) but every Thanksgiving my grandma would make these really good homemade buns. No other buns/bread I've ever had tasted like those. I don't know what the recipe is; when she died last year the recipe went with her. We tried to make the same buns but they turned out to be hockey pucks made of bread.

Aw....I was lucky, my aunt mamie wrote down or still makes a lot of the recipes my gram never wrote down.

Keep looking, maybe someone in the family that you haven't yet asked, knows it or saw how she made it?

This one is a Thanksgiving staple, and really easy to make too. My Armenian friend who came to my Thanksgiving dinner last year had never had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner before. Needless to say she's coming again this year and made sure before she RSVP'ed that I was making "that sweet potato thing".

Sweet Potato Casserole

3 cups sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs
1/2 stick margarine, melted
1/2 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Topping
1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup margarine, melted

Mix all together well. Put in buttered baking dish and put topping on
top and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

My favorite recipe: "Eating out"
I just don't like to cook and I'm so glad other people do. That nice stainless steel ceramic glass-top stove is wasted on me!

Does anyone have a good recipe for sweet potato pie WITH the mini marshmallows on top? (watch someones going to say - the recipe above-but add marshmallows
). I've only had it a few times in my life, but I loved it..anyway I'm making thanksgiving dinner this year, and I'd really like to make one, so if anyone's got a good recipe, I'd love to hear it

my one cant-live-without it (besides turkey and stuffing) is chocolate cream pie

I have to have the totally homemade sausage stuffing, It's tradition
I can't stand boxed although homemade is a job from drying out the bread to the end it's soooooooo worth it

The 'recipe above' is mine, and my husband prefers the marshmallows too. I think I'm going to make the casserole part as stated then pour it into two smaller casserole dishes. I'll half the brown sugar topping recipe and put that one one and just put marshmallows on the other. When my mom made it that way she just used the same recipe and covered the top with marshmallows. Hope it works out for you!

This is my first year doing a Thanksgiving dinner, so I've been stalking this thread. I hope no one minds that I rip off some of what they do. I'll let you know how it turns out!

PS: I'll also give you credit if it works well. If it doesn't then I'll take full blame.

If you're feeling adventurous Heather, these dinner rolls are awesome. My mom always makes them, but I'm not brave enough yet. Then again I've never made bread before.

1 cup boiling water
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 ½ tsp salt

2 eggs beaten

1 cup warm water
2 pkg dry yeast

6 cups unsifted flour (I use bread flour)

Pour boiling water over shortening, sugar and salt. Blend and cool, add beaten eggs. Meanwhile in another bowl soften yeast by putting into warm water and stir until dissolved, after yeast has had time to grow, add to mixture. Add flour and blend well. I oil my bowl inside slightly before putting dough in it. Cover and place in refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Will keep in refrigerator up to 10 days.

About 3 hours before baking rolls, place dough on floured counter and knead several times until dough is elastic like. Roll out and cut, place on greased pan and allow to rise in warm area until dough has doubled in size. Bake 425 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.

Thanks I may just try this. I was thinking about doing Martha Stewart's Turkey Tail Rolls this year, but that involves a ruler. I like to drink a glass of wine when cooking a big meal, so things can get.... hazy.

Bread making is a wonderful art; enjoy your first try at it.

Have you ever tried Racheal Rays stuffing muffins? We are making them this year - not sure if she has more than one version, the one we are making is called Apple - Onion Stuffin' Muffins.
