Hi all,

I was wondering what you thought about cats and chicken bones?.

My vet told me to feed Tyson 1 chicken wing+bones a week to help his teeth.

I was concerned about the bones, but she said "they are fine for cats".

What do you think as i thought cat's couldn't eat them or is that dogs?

Thanks

Sue

Two of my cats are crunching on chicken wings as I'm typing this.
The bones are fine as long as they're not cooked. The cooking is what causes splintering.

I"m not sure about the bones. I feed my cats raw food and they get chunks of raw chicken thighs to chew on so that exercises there gums and keeps thier teeth strong. I have heard of some people feeding thier cats raw pieces of meat with bones. The most important thing to remember is that the bones must not be cooked in any way. Cooked bones will spinter and cause problems. Raw bones dont do this. Check out this web site for more info:http://www.catnutrition.org/

Oh yes, raw bones are wonderful for cats, as long as they are covered with a good amount of meat. My cats and dogs are fed a raw diet, so they get raw bones everyday and their teeth a pearly white!

Under a stack of blueberry waffles.
I feed my cats canned wet and raw, bone-in chicken a few times a week for their teeth/a treat. Their teeth are white and healthy, and their gums look great. I've not seen even a little plaque for a long time now.

You should be able to get a dental dry food from your vets. They are larger than normal biscuits and they don't break until the tooth is about three quarters through the biscuit. Also, if your cat will tolerate it you can try brushing with a toothpaste and toothbrush from your vets. Alternatively, you can get a paste which you can put on their food which breaks down bacteria in the mouth. This is flavoured so a lot of the time they will eat it as is.

Thanks so much for the great replies!

I have some gel too that i'm applying twice a day to help things along.

I can't feed him any food that's good for "teeth" as he's on a CD dry food diet as he has Struvite crystals 22 months ago.

Yep. Some of them will eat it, some of them won't. My oldest cat can't eat RMBs because he no longer has any back teeth, I have to cut meat in small pieces for him. My next oldest cat doesn't recognize it as food but he will eat chicken if I cut it in chunks, same with my only female cat. The rest attack chicken wings/thighs with gusto.

Chicken bones are great for cats! They're not only good for the teeth, the cats normally think they're great fun! It gives exercise to the cats whole upper body and the jaw muscles.

Chicken bones are far more effective than dental dry food.

Are they supposed to eat and swallow the bones? And do you give them the tip + middle or the entire wing (with all 3 sections?). My cat ate an entire chicken neck (bone & all) and made herself sick for a few days, so just concerned.

I use heavy duty shears to chop the raw chicken bones, cut off tip and forearm then cut forearm down middle of the two bones. I have been feeding them several a week and I couldnt believe how nuts they go, they crunch through each one - shifting it from side to side - so I know it's cleaning their teeth! After all, they eat : mice, birds, ra bits etc in wild, and I cannot afford vet teeth cleaning bills!! They are super healthy and sometimes get hearts and livers with little plain yogurt for desert[emoji]128058[/emoji][emoji]128049[/emoji]
