Is this strange?

As some may know, I just got a cat, I have never previously had a cat, just dogs so I don't know if this is normal, or what to do about it, but my new kitten likes to go behind the couch and then crawl up the back of it. I don't know if he is using it as a scratching post, or just playing but I really don't want him to ruin the furniture and I don't know what to do. Can anyone help?

Climbing, etc are a natural part of cat's behaviors. You might want to get kitty a sissel scratcing post and introducing kitty to that.
It could just be that kitty is trying out his paws and climbing ability too!
