Just thought up a question stemming from the radio question.

My family didn't either...and I cherished (and still have) 4 old Havilland china plates, chipped, that I found in a Louisianna secondhand shop from when I lived there. I liked them because they were old, and lovely (chipped or not).

I also found 4 Blue Willow bowls dated 1907 from one of the shops I visited while living there, still cherish those too, though I no longer use them.

I have my Royal Albert china and my Rogers 1867 silver, an assortment of crystal (some Waterford pieces, some German crystal). My parents have Royal Albert and Mikasa china, plus the usual assortment of crystal and silver. My mother loves beautiful dishes (and she raised me to be the same) - she even drinks her breakfast juice out of a crystal goblet every morning just to start her day off special - at 86 1/2, I say God Bless Her!

I love this thread! Those bowls sound soooo sweet. I love china, and antiques, so you can just image how lucky I think you are!

Ooops
What did you do? In my family, you'd likely have been killed.

Oh, dear. But see? It just proves how much she loves you.

She figured my sister would be using the dishes as dog or cat food bowls (she guessed that right), so she gave the set to a young neighbor who really appreciated it.
I think most people nowadays prefer something you can safely put in the dishwasher.
I think that's really sweet.

My mother collected tea pots and her mother collected tea sets (an interest I share, which is bizarre, because that alone should have made them abhorrent to me!) There were three sets left when they passed away, and my sisters and I did 1,2,3 preferences - luckily each of us had a different first perferance. My sisters are holding on to my set for me (I live 3000 miles away.)

I'm glad your mom and her neighbour found an arrangement. Those stories are as sweet as family heirloom stories.

That's really quite pretty!

I can't wait to have my own set, there is family china, but I think my sisters will keep that (with my blessing), and my mother's silver too.

To answer the OP, I have stone ware, plain but my own choice, that I'm happy with for the moment, but it is every day stuff. It's a mix of tan pieces and brown pieces, square and heavy - contempory. Totally plain, so if you dress up the table it blends in, but I would still like china for those special occasions.

And since I'm allegic to silver, one day I hope to get somthing like this:

Thank you! The photo link of your china shows a very pretty pattern. Two of my cousins on my dad's side got their china the same way

Thank you! That is ornate and very pretty! I have my gram's silverplate, which I'll be handing back to another of her favorite grand-daughters (a bit younger then I..my mom was young when she had me and was her mom's first born - and she was young when she had her...so...there is a good age gap between me as the eldest grandchild and the later grandchildren) for everyday use, I love a simple beaded design from Oneida (used to live not far from Oneida so I could go to their factory for best prices on flatware)

I'm at work, so won't be able to take pics until a lot later, but I will, because I love it, and in fact it will be out for tomorrow's dinner, since we'll be celebrating Rob's birthday.
It took a while to get back to this, since Thursdays are crazy and Friday we had the Birthday dinner, but here is my "Mirage", table set for dinner...

detail...

The image here shows the detail a little better, particularly if you click to enlarge it.

It's been discontinued for over 30 years, and I'm still looking for a replacement for my gravy boat, which met an unfortunate accident some years ago.
One day maybe it'll turn up somewhere.

Movin' on up!
My mother has a set of Noritake that pops brought home from Okinawa in 1969 and I don't think that its ben out of the china cabinet, since then. Eventually, it will be mine and it will probably be stored away and handed to my granddaughters.

There is a set of antique china in my storage locker. My late husband's grandmother brought it over from Switzerland, in the 1870s. Some day, I'm going to get ambitious and sell it.

I have a set of deep purple stoneware - suits me.

My Grandmother got her China the same way. I always loved it. I'm not sure the pattern name, but I can look next time I visit. When my Mom and I were at the craft fair recently we found these vendors who make night lights from teacups and wall hangings from a saucer and half a tea cup, well we actually found one that looks like it was made from my Grandmother's china! Of course Mom scooped that right up!
