I took Shadow in for a blood test tuesday morning and spent all day and night worrying about what the results would be. After losing Midnight to kidney disease back in June all of the memories of those last couple of days with her came flooding back. Until a few days ago, Shadow has been a little lethargic, lost some weight and has kept to himself. Now he's acting more like his old self (he'll be 13 soon- no pun intended).

Anyway, I was able to breathe a very large sigh of relief when the vet told me that he doesn't have kidney disease. He does a slight thyroid problem but the vet said that it wasn't enough to start medication. He'll go back in a month for another test.

He also has fleas, they were brought in by the kittens. They have all started a three month treatment with Frontline.

Did the vet tell you what his thyroid levels were? While the normal range for younger cats is usually 0.8 to 4.0 (though it may vary depending on the lab), older cats' levels should be kept between 0.8 and 2.5. If the level is above that, I would consider starting treatment. Ask your vet if there is some reason to wait, but thyroid problems don't go away on their own. Chronically high levels of thyroid hormone can damage other organs over time. If your kitty is showing signs of being affected by hyperthyroidism (such as weight loss), treating it would be a good idea.

Thanks.

Nope, the vet didn't tell me the levels and I didn't think to ask at the time. I left a message on her voice mail about it so I should hear from her sometime tomorrow.

I would suggest that you ask for copies of Shadow's blood work. I keep copies for my cats because I have a better chance of spotting a trend than my vet, since she is so busy.
