You can make your own solution that will kill the mites. Make a solution with Boric Acid Powder, Rubbing Alcohol(small amount) and water. The boric acid kills the mites and the alcohol dries the moisture which is a haven for the mites. Shake the solution well as the boric acid does not dissolve well. Shake immediately before putting in ears. Do this a couple times a day for a week or so. It also makes it more comfortable for your cat if the solution is warm(not hot) when applying.
I found thing on the internet. Does this really work? Is it safe? Carla

Yes it does! I make this solution mainly for my labs but i do use it about once every month or so for the cats. The only difference is i don't use water. Mine is rubbing alcohol, boric acid powder & gentian violet which is an anti-fungal i order at the local pharmacy for about 2 dollars.

"Purple Power Ear Solution"
aka "purple power potion!!!"

16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet Solution

Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (You may need to pour out a small amount of alcohol so it will all fit.) Be sure and SHAKE WELL before each use to disperse the boric acid. It's easier to put in the dog's ears if you put some in a small squirt bottle.

Treatment: Flood ear with solution & massage gently for 60 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Flood a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. The Gentian Violet isn't supposed to stain, but be careful.

Thank you so much. The gentian violet, can you find this at say a walmart pharmacy or did you go to a strict pharmacy only? Thanks, Carla

I just went to rite aid. Any pharmacy should be able to order it for you. You don't need a perscription. it comes in 1% and 2% order the 1.

My SIL used a homemade recipe on her Golden Doodle's ears that they got from a friend who swore by it - last night I got an e-mail from her to say the dog's ears were all swollen and inflamed.

I think that is a chance you take with any medicine. An allergic reaction is possible with anything. I had a lab with severe allergies to food that caused major ear problems and this was a saving grace for her. I totally agree to let your vet know what you are doing. I have let mine know and he is fine with it.
