Have a question. My two dogs are kennel trained. My question is........ Are only some breads "meant" to be kennel trained; particularly Shelties and Border Collies. I have always thought that the answer was no, that it's a good idea to kennel train any breed, but recently I've been wondering ever since someone at my work started talking about their Sheltie.

I have kennel or crate trained all my dogs. It is always a good idea to start them young if you can, but I think the dogs like the crate or kennel, because it does make them feel safe. Our German Shepherd, all we have to do is tell her to go to bed, and she goes right into her kennel and lays down and stays there, even if the door is open.

Yeah, mine are the same way. If they get spooked they go to their cage too. I just wanted to make sure that there weren't some breeds who's disposition couldn't handle it. The elderly owners of the company I work for, they are in their 80's, have a neutered sheltie who is just over a year old. They were telling me how he barks and chases after them when they leave and I was telling them that it is important for him to learn a routine and that crate training works really well. I explained to them that it can take weeks before the dog goes into the crate on it's own, but it's well worth it once you get there. Plus, like you said, it's their safe place.

Thanks Hissy, I always like to make sure I don't give out bad information

I have never crated our dogs, but my sister does with her two German Shephards and they seem really accustomed to the routine.
