I learned that when I found Frankie and took her to the vet. We'd already named her Frankie (after Frank Sinatra who died about a month before we found her... thats a story in itself) then we got her to the vet who informed us that almost all calico's are female. That's not the first time I've had an identity crisis w/ a cat either.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I always thought the "rule" was in relation to calicos.

Lazlo is a tabby - he's grey, black, and white with a coffee-colored splotch on his mouth and nose and two coffee-colored splotches on his neck (looks like a vampire bit him!). We call him "the coffee stained boy."

Reilly has 4 colours and he's male (brown, black, white around his mouth and orange).

My dilute calico is a female though

Me too... My Toulouse is white, black, brown and tan. No tri-color there!

My sister has a male dilute calico. Most, but not all, ginger cats in Germany are males, but Malta is known for its ginger females.

I agree and want to add:
I don't consider black and white to be true "colors."
A color is found on the color wheel: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet.
Black, White and Grey are not included because they are not considered to be colors. White is all light and black is the absence of light.

It has always been confusing
Yet interesting too.

What I am trying to say is, are they count only the primary colors or do are black, white and grey considered too.

Let's confuse things even more...brown=black and black=brown, it all depends on intensity! And then, cream=red and red=cream, back to intensity again!!!! hehehehe...
I'm sure we've all seen black cats that look brown and red cats go cream...haven't we?

And, lastly, white is NOT a colour, it is an absence of color and can mask all sorts of color in the bloodlines...

Have I confused all of you yet? I hope so, since I get confused by cat colors anyway!

When I was younger, I had a male calico kitten. I learned that if he had made it to adulthood he would have shown to be sterile. That's the only male I've ever met! I have a female quad colored calico now that I love!

Tri-color means three colors in one cat. I have a quad color calico as she has four colors!

Not true!! I just came from the vets office and they said my cat was a very rare one. More than 3 colors and a male! He's my golden child!

YUP, when people make that statement, they are reffering to the **calicos**.......Because there are ragdoll males amongst the 3 colored cats, and tabby/whites, ect. But it DOES run as a general rule that there are no male calicos. And I think the only few out there are tortie type, not big patches like the actual calico color. ........What about the japanese bobtail who I think is supposed to be white with a few big patches??
There are male calicos, but they're rare. Here is one Are There Male Calico Cats?
