Alright I just got back from upstate NewYork(at a place we have up there-which is why I wasn't on TCS lately) and do I have something to tell you all!

So, the cow farmers nextdoor are very nice people. THey are very friendly, and always wwelcome us when we coem to see the cows. Not that they are irresponsible(they just dont have a lot of money), they have like 30 cats and kittens!

They're just farm cats and come in for food. There's a lot of them! I got to meet to kittens, name Mellow and Yellow. Mellow has a bad cold guys. Her brother, yellow seems to be getting it, along with other cats. I told the farmer that she should be keeping the cats away from Mellow. I didn't tell her to bring her to the vet, because I know she couldn't afford ot. I would have payed for it if I had any money!

Obviously, none are neutered or spayed! Couldn't they at least do it to one sex? That would narrow it down quite a bit! These cats are going to get very sick, and I'm afraid. It seems as though these farmers had always had thesemany cats, but it just can't be good.

THey have soooo many cats that they dont even name. They have kittens about 5 inches long (I didn't get to see them though) that hide and live under a barn! Except to eat!

What I'm saying is they always tell me if I want a bag full (not seriously a bag! Dont worry.), I'm welsome. If my mom would let me, I totally would! And if I could afford it!

Cats get hit my cars, living right next to a main road. They just lost a baby last week!

If anybody here wants to adopt a cat, and save a life, tell me! Get them away from colds, cars, and into a nice house! I totally would if I could.

Thank you all soooooo much for listening!

How about an even better idea....contact a local TNR group to see about getting these cats spayed or neutered. For every cat that is removed...there are still others who can get pregnant and the cycle just starts again. Best thing is if these cats can be mass trapped, spayed/neutered and then returned so that they cannot add to the overpopulation.

I agree with TNR1

And if the farmers reason to not spay and neuter is because they always want to have cats around to catch mice- then hook them up with a shelter that has spayed and neutered ferals. You could stop the cats from reproducing and provide a good home for some deserving feral cats as well!

One of my SIL's has a large farm and a fair amount of cats-again not spayed/nuetered. They (this sounds terrible) will cull their cats every once in a while because sometimes a stray will come in with distemper or a really aggressive male or they notice something not right with some of the cats. They do buy cat food for them though- before me they didn't. Its hard not to say more than I do but I think this happens alot on dairy farms.

Gail...can you contact a TNR group and see if there is some literature that you can provide to your SIL.

The sad part about cats in this situation is that normally, the farmer doesn't need to "cull" the cats - nature does it for them. I lived out in the country long enough to see this as the normal course of action, with neighbors offering to be "neighborly" by coming over and shooting the cats.

You just need to continuously educate about TNR. It also helps to plant people like us out there to do that (and simply TNR any cat that happens to wander over for a nibble).
