Why does a neutered male

still try to mate with a spayed female?
The boy I had did this from time to time. He would go for a few weeks without, and then I'd find them mimicking mating behavior. Well, he was, he just subdued the girl.
I have often wondered why he still had the urge to do this, and if he knew that he couldn't really mate anymore.

I'd appreciate any information about this.

It sounds like dominance display, not mating behaviour.
Cats of the same sex do this as well. It's their way of showing each other who is "boss" or dominant...My boys do this occasionally as well..

Or it could just be he was spayed late?

There was a neighborhood Aussie who mated with all the girls in heat, even tied with them but SURPRISE! he was neutered

Well, I guess it was domination thing, because the girl-kitty was spayed.
