I lost my kitty a few months ago to kidney failure. I didnt know how bad he was until the last few days....he was fine and then all of sudden he wasnt. I decided to have him put to sleep as the costs were gettin so insane and he was getting sicker. Its hard to watch your cat sick and not be able to afford all the stuff you want to take care of him. So, I know how you feel. It stinks!!! Not peeing IS pretty serious, is he an outdoor cat that he could have been hit be something that is effecting him like this? Some of these things (even if the vet finds out what it is) are REAL expensive, so dont feel bad just keep him comfortable and hang out with him

just out of curiosity how old was ur cat when he died? My cat is 11 and i feel like thats too young for a cat to die, because i thought that most cats usually lived to about 13-15. It kind of makes me feel like its my fault somehow. Well she went to the vet today again and they emptied her bladder, and she might be able to urinate on her own now but we'll have to wait and see. She hasnt been doing well today, shes the same as yesterday. A couple days ago she was doing so good, i dont know wat happened. I found some information about Chronic Renal failure, and a lot of the symptoms she had were described there, but the vet never really mentioned it so I dont know. All i know is that i miss the way she was last week and I really hope she gets better.

I'm so sorry your cat hasn't been well. Did the vet do a urine test or any blood tests on your kitty? I know it's really hard, especially when you are a kid you can feel pretty powerless. Sounds like your dad is really trying to help her.

I want to encourage you to hang in there and not give up hope. One of my cats was gravely ill the last few weeks and even had to spend 3 days in the hospital. He was dying. He went from around 10 lbs to 5.8 lbs. He's been home for 2 weeks and is finally on his way to being better. But it was a bumpy road. He'd get better for a day or two and then would seem worse again. Just make sure she gets lots of water and food and that she is using her litter box. Have you noticed any wet spots in her litter box yet? I really hope your cat gets better. Please keep us updated.

Did the doctor do a bloodwork panel on your cat?

I've seen much younger cats with renal failure. Recently at the clinic where I work, a seven year old was diagnosed. A few fluid treatments and a change of diet later, and she's doing quite well. My own cat was diagnosed at 16, and went a full year without any major problems. She's been pretty sick off and on the past month, but it's been managable with fluids, diet and medication. She also has heart disease. She'll do well for a few weeks, then her treatment will need some tweaking.

Not all of the treatment is expensive. For instance, getting fluid treatments done once or twice a week at your vets can be a strain, but if you have the vet teach you to do them yourself at home, the price would reduce significantly, up to 1/10th the cost per treatment.

I have to agree with this. I had a calico Persian kitty named Hallie who I lost a little over a year ago. She was only 4 years old. But I don't want to scare you. Hallie was probably born with Polycystic Kidney disease and it is not the most common thing for a cat to die of kidney disease as young as she was. She was diagnosed with it by ultrasound when she was very young. There are a lot of other cats here on this site that have survived and lived a good life with kidney problems so if that is what your cat has, there is hope! Low protein diet and sub-Q fluids when she's not doing well will perk her right up!

that actuially sounds a lot like wat happening with my cat. The vet said that her lungs and heart were really strong, but her kidneys are small, so i think its probably kidney failure, even though the vets still think it could have been a stroke or an injury. But like wat u said my cat has been doing well for a couple days and then getting worse again, then getting better. Whenever she has a good day she seems to eat a lot. It makes me feel better to hear that ur cat had the same kind of problem but is now doing better. Hopefully the same thing will happen. Its only been a little over a week since shes been like this, so i guess there's still time for her to improve. And we havent had any urine tests or blood tests because my dad doesn't want to pay for them, but ill m,ake sure she gets a lot of food and water. Shes been doing good today, shes wobbling around and eating. It seems like shes almost normal, except she still cant walk right.

I am so sorry about your cat. is he an inside or outside cat? or both? if he is both then he is pretty old for and inside-outside cat or even an inside cat. i m not much help (being a kid myself) but whenever i have problems with me and my dad i sit him down and say,"dad i have something to tell and i want to say it with out being interupted or anything like that until i am done." then explain to him how special this cat is to you and what she means to you. offer to pay the vet bill if u r able. i hope this helps alot!

Shes just an inside cat, so i guess she is pretty old. I already tried telling my dad that i would pay the bill (i have enough) but my dad keeps saying theres no point to spend so much money on an older cat when there's not guarantee that it will do anything. And its impossible to have a conversation with my dad without him interupting. But luckily right now she seems to be doing better. I just hope it will last.

Your cat is not really that old. The average life of an indoor cat is 15-18 years. She's getting there but not quite yet

Very true, many of my indoor cats have lived to be 18-20 years of age.

i m praying for your cat. but sometimes you just have 2 understand that all cats die and it might be close to her time so give her a much love as possible. i may sound older than 13 but trust me on this i have a cat who keeps getting little holes in his head (i cant remember what their called) and my dad said that we might have to put him down because he is miserable. ( i m crying as i right this because cats r my #1 pet choice) so maybe ur poor kitty just needs 2 be put out of his misery. please dont get mad @ me for saying this. after u have some time to mourn ur kitty (if u put her down) maybe u could a new cat fround the pound. he would help u recover from the death of kitty. it will make u feel so much better if u now she isnt in ne pain

Hi there. I just wanted to encourage you to hang in there. My Teazer-cat is 12 going on 13. We found a lump on her leg and took her to the vet. My vet was adament that 11 going on 12 was WAY to young for me to loose her. After the surgery to remove the lump (successfully!), she got up on my bed one morning and peed blood on my quilt. I am usually a calm rational person but I came unglued. Turned out she had a bladder infection. We went through three rounds of antibiotics before she finally conqured it. There was a time there I was feeding her watered down baby food (you might try that) and squirting water in her mouth with a syringe just to get her to drink something. She had a geriatric blood test done and everything came back fine.

But there were times there when I would just fall apart because I thought I was going to loose her and I felt like it was my fault! Why hadn't I noticed something was wrong sooner, and stuff like that. But honestly, our kitties can't walk up to us and say, "Umm...something's wrong..." You did the right thing by getting her to the vet right away and keeping an eye on her. You didn't do anything wrong, in fact, you're doing things right. You're a good parent! Hang in there. 11 isn't old. My Teazer-cat is going on 13, and despite that little rough patch, she's doing as good as ever.

Keep us posted.

My cat had a cystotomy, and has had 2 fluid treatments. The vet said mayve some pedialyte or gatorade thru an eye dropper. Bloodwork is normal.

He is at 12.9 pounds, down 9 ounces.

Thats another problem: my dad said that we can't get a new cat after my cats die (i actually have 2 cats, they are sisters). Another reason why im so worried about my cat is because shes really close with her sister. The first day I found her last week when i noticed she couldnt walk right and seemed sick both of my cats were with each other the whole entire day.
Anyway, i dont think she'll be dying anytime soon. Shes doing a lot better. Shes walking around a lot more, shes a bit wobbly and she falls occasionally, but aside from that she seems pretty good. She cant get up or down the stairs, which is a problem because the litter is in the basement so if she needs to go she just walks over to me and meows so i can take her down to it. Shes eating normally and is hydrated, her fur (which i noticed seemed a little dull before) seems to be more colorful again, her eys are fine, and she smells a lot better. Basically, all of her symtoms decreased a lot. The only things i still notice is that shes licking her lips a lot, i think shes sneezing occasionally, and im dont think shes been urinating. Of course the wobbly walk causes some issues too. And in my opinion i think her breath smells a little bad (but just barely, u have to closely pay attention). The way i see it is that its only been 2 weeks and shes improved this much, so give it another few weeks and she'll be fine.

I'm glad she's hanging in there.

Make sure at very least you're feeding her (and her sister, if they're the same age) a senior/mature cats type of food. You can ask the vet if there's anything you can/should add to her food to help if she does have kidney issues. I've seen it done more with dogs than cats, but giving them extra carbs mixed with their food can help. Rice, pasta, even bread.

I feel the same way you do. My eldest is in rough shape, but I can't give up on her when she won't give up. As long as she continues to show improvement and will to live, I'll fight for her.

I do hope there is a good outcome to this, but lip licking, lack of urination, smelly breath and struggling to walk are still very serious symptoms, and could be an organ problem.

the only problems are really the lip licking and lack of urination (unless shes urinating somewhere outside of the litter that i dont know of, but i doubt it). The walking is getting better as the days go by and i think im just imagining the smell breath because im paranoid, because no one else notices it and even for me to smell it i have to concentrate pretty hard. however i did notice another problem. When she poops its not the brownish color it usually is. instead its a bright tannish color. If anyone knows anything about what any of these symtoms can mean, please tell me. Im trying to get her back to the vet as soon as possible.
