I was just curious if any of you out there have Vertigo. I have it really bad to where I take a pill every 8 hours to keep from having dizzy spells and fainting. Usually my medicine works excellent and prevents any problems- but today, i've been having dizzy spells and headaches all day. For those of you with Vertigo, what do you normally do when your symptoms flare up? If yours is medically treated, what do you take to help yours?

only time in my life, was 2 weeks, ago got out of bed, and fell back into it.
I had to call my father to come help me to stand up, and take me to the hospistal

every time i stood up,the rooms would just spin around, which granted when i am in a airplane that is really cool!!!!!.. but not when you are standing naked in the bed room trying to find the bath room.

anyway turns out i had a sinus and ear infection, after about 3 days of drugs and i was fine .,

I've had 'a touch' of it before. Not often fortunately. My Mother and my Grandparent's have all had it multiple times. My Mom was recently diagnosed withe something called Mariner's disease. She has pills for it that knock her out. Usually they all just stay in a dark and quiet room and sit still!

Rent the movie! It's a great Jimmy Stewart movie which will explain to you everything you ever wanted to know about it. Yes, I have it too. Back in May my wife talked me into going to the top of the Eiffel Tower and my eyes were closed all the way up and down...

I experience vertigo as a symptom of a medical condition I have. Mine doesn't need to be controlled with medication at this time. Things like standing with your eyes closed is a big no no, the room spins and I loose my ability to tell up from down. Moving to fast or spinning in a circle will put me down faster than tripping me will.

One day they say I might need medication but I will put it off as long as I can.

To answer your question there isn't anything but flat on my back that takes care of my vertigo. I do better with lights off and a cool cloth draped over my eyes. Oh ya and I have to hold something to balance me. The bedspread, pillow or even a cat helps me tell up from down.

I hope you feel better!

I do. Actually what I have is pre-syncope. The room doesn't spin for me but I get the ringing in my ears, graying vision and stars, and feel really light headed to the point I have to sit down, lay down or flop over something or I faint.

They aren't sure what is causing it right now. I'm undergoing testing and went to see another doctor on Wednesday who I believe is referring me to a cardiologist. My family doctor put me on a medication called "Serc" for a month trial. It didn't seem to help very much, if at all, that I noticed.

Are you sure you are having "vertigo"? Vertigo, pre-syncope and syncope are different.

One thing I do know is that a build up of calcium in the inner ear can cause dizziness. Have you been to an ear specialist? If you have such a condition a few simple positions can drain the excess calcium. I believe it takes all of 10 minutes or less to do.

I haven't had this, but my husband has been suffering from a recurring bout of it recently. It's really frustrating, and quite scary at times. I think his is due to a sinus infection too.

Do you have it constantly, Nikki? That must be so hard to deal with.

Parties at your place must be a hoot! I'm sorry, but I just had this vision of everyone sitting quietly in a dark room...

I had an episode when I was 20. I came down with a virus and by that night, I couldn't sit up or turn over without the room severely spinning. And I couldn't keep anything down. (it was like a really bad hangover but without the fun before) I ended up in the hospital for a few days and it went away. I hope to never have that happen again.

I'm really feel for anyone who has this frequently.

I guess I should have mentioned that earlier- yes, I was diagnosed by an ENT- actually, one of the best ones in the South- he's awesome- Dr. Shea at the Shea Center for Hearing & Balance- awesome, awesome doctor
...- he completly fixed my ears last year after doing surgery on them
/ I have Meniere's disease- so a lot of my symptoms are a direct result of that disease. I also have TMD - many people incorrectly call it TMJ- everyone has TMJ- it's a joint that connects your jaw to your skull- but TMD is a disorder of that joint to where your jaw doesn't correctly align itself- it can put pressure on your ears and other parts of your skull and cause really bad ear/jaw aches (not good if you have Meiners
). I have a mouthpiece (clear and you can't tell i'm wearing it) that I sleep in at night that really helps my TMD symptoms- that helps a lot!
I used to be a music major- so when I was constantly singing - my TMD acted up really badly as did my vertigo and meiners.
/So TMD can affect Vertigo symptoms as well. I have severe vertigo- I take a VERY low dose of diazepam 3x a day to control the dizzy spells- it's used in extremly low, non habit forming doses to treat vertigo on occassion. / When they were in the process of diagnosing me with vertigo, they had to rule out other things first - they origionally thought it was my heart- so i was sent to a cardiologist and put through a ton of tests for that (which they did find some things out about my heart when I was there thank goodness- so I do have to be careful- I have a very rapid heart beat.) Then they sent me to a neurosuergon to rule out MS...so thankfully i didn't have that eithor. After a few more tests by my ent- he diagnosed me with vertigo. Also- I have a benign cystic brain tumor- in a really weird spot on my brain...so sometimes it can cause symptoms as well. My low blood pressure also causes vertigo symptoms. When I have a vertigo spell I - get extremly dizzy, see stars, get very heart, my heart beats extremly fast, I often faint and black out completly and the list goes on....usually on my medicine- I have NO symptoms at all- but once in a while i will get them- and today was one of those days. I completly fainted earlier...I don't know how long i was out eithor because I was by myself. I don't think i was out long though. / I haven't had that happen in a long time. / Also, if i get too hot like in the summer or after taking a really steamy shower- i'll have Vertigo spells then as well. Normally the medicine works well, but sometimes, nothing does. I also have a salt imbalance- so if I don't have enough sodium in my system i get lightheaded and have vertigo symptoms as well. It kinda stinks- but usually the medicne prevents all of those symptoms...but on days that it doesn't i'm miserable.

If you've never experienced veritgo before and want to know what if feels like, have someone sit you in a swivel chair and spin you around real fast for about a minute while you keep your eyes closed, then immediately after, open your eyes and stand up (and please make sure you have someone there to catch you if you fall). This basically induces vertigo.

If you've ever been really drunk, and the room is spinning but you're not moving, or that's what vertigo is like.

I have true rotational vertigo (including today), and I have to say I hate it more than just about anything in the whole world, except maybe neurolgia.

I sleep for over twelve hours because of a bad bout yesterday evening.

I had vertigo as a symptom of TMJ a few years ago. Sometimes it'd hit me when I stood up, but mostly when I bent over, like to clean the litterbox. My vision seemed to get dark around the edges and I'd hear a wooshy sound in my ears, like the ocean was in my head. It was very scary feeling. And the last thing you want is to faint face-first into a litterbox.

I also have bouts of "vertigo" due to inner ear damage when I was a kid and was given massive doses of a super strong antibiotic. I forget the name of the medication but one side effect was some inner ear nerve damage. My ears no longer move the ear wax out like normal so every so often when the vertigo gets too bad I go into the doctor to get my ears vacuumed.
There isn't medication or anything that can help just yet so I have just adapted over the years and learned not to get up or turn too quickly.

I have had an inner ear thing once thought I had a brain tumor when I woke up and my alarm clock lights were going up and down, or so I thought. I went to the hospital and they gave me meds it took a long time to go away I felt nauseous all the time... My friend has vertigo a lot...so I have much sympathy for you Nikki!

I had a very severe episode once - couldn't open my eyes for three days, had to be taken to the hospital, had to crawl to go from bedroom to bathroom - it was horrible. I don't know how you can function with it on a daily basis.

I did some very specific exercises to get the calcium deposits in my inner ears back into place, and that's what made it go away.

thanks. I'm sorry you had such a bad spell with it!
/ my vertigo seems to be in check today, so i'm happy
my meds are working again
/ I do have a tumor on my brain but it is a benign cystic one- it does occassionally affect it- have you been checked out by a neurologist?- it is very common to get cystic ones that are benign....i'm supposed to go in every 6 months to check it- but i haven't been since they diagnosed me with the tumor over a year and a half ago- it's sooooo expensive for a visit. / If you have any more spells- definitely look into getting treated for it by your ENT- i've found that the only thing that helps mine is a very low dose of diazepam 3x a day (it's non habit forming/non dependency forming in the really low doses used to treat vertigo and it works wonders!!) for me, I also stick to a diet with plenty of sodium in it- because when my sodium levels get low, i have a spell....it's pretty common in a lot of ppl with low bloodpressure and salt imbalances- nothing major
