I know I must have the stupidest question to ask on the planet to ask y'all. so here goes...
Miagi and Tiger are the only cats I have had in my life and I am still learning about them. (we got Miagi in 2004 and Tiger last year)
Can cats see color?
I feel so stupid.

That is a very interesting question! I'd like to think that they do so their world doesn't look so bland. I know that Siam can see the bright green squirt gun when we pick it up, doesn't even need to be pointed at him....he stops his unacceptable behavior when he sees it. So he either sees the color or the shape. Siam will also drag my red socks out but ignores my white socks.

I could be wrong, but I think I read here (somewhere, at some point in time LOL) that cats can see limited colors.

My experience says that they can see differences in colors. Ophelia likes to play with black silk rose buds. The shape and size is hard enough to find, but black? OY! I tried burgandy, thinking it was dark so she would like it. Nope. Tried a dark blue. No go. Only black rose buds.
And she liked her ostrich feather wand toy too - when we had a blue one. Couldn't find blue, so tried red. Nope, not interested.
She's our little feral princess, quite spoiled.
Trent doesn't care as long as it moves. Ginger hasn't shown a color preference yet - she's still a kitten so she likes anything that moves too.

Here's a little factoid. Because cats can see in low light, their abilities to see color is more limited. Something to do with rods vs cones. They are also more primed to see movement.

Edit: looks like Jen and I stumbled on the same site. It pretty cool

Cats have a lot more rods in their eyes which are the cells to allow you to see in the dark. Cones are for light and are the cells that can differentiate colours. Cats eyes are more suited for picking up movement, and contrasts in colours....but somehow cat's must know something about colour...then know just what sweater of mine to sleep on that contrast best with their fur! LOL

I was told by my vet that cat's can see in color, but it's not very helpful to them. The majority of the information they get about danger and such is done through sense of smell.

Cats can see in color but everything that they see is more blurry than what we see. For example, if you are reading a book and a cat comes up behind you, they can see the lines of text but its all just a blurry black line to them instead of clear like it is for us.
