My little Elliott started drinking in the toilet...this is a new thing that he started recently...I know I have to train myself to keep the lid down, but what would suddenly cause him to start this?? He's even managed to open the shower door recently to drink the water by the drain.

I change his water bowl 3 times a day, so I doubt it's the fresh water, and he's never been one to go on the counter, and drink from the tap...unlike Pixie who does this!!

Any advice?? thanks

Some kits just love fresh fresh freeeeeeeeeeesh water..Trout will only drink from her water bowl if she is PARCHED...it seems she would rather wait for days until toilet lid is up before she touches her water bowl

None of mine ever toilet-drank, but they all prefer a larger, deeper bowl of water than most pet bowls can provide. I use a 2 quart pasta pot. It gets bonus points for being too heavy for them to tip or move around.

Thanks for the info...Normally it wouldn't bother me, but I sometimes put those bleach pelletsin the tank, so I'm worried...guess I just gotta remeber to put the lid down.

Another quick question....how do you trim their claws?? I know Pixie would never let me near her to snip the tip...is there something that would help her calm down for a few minutes?? Would Feliway work....I bought some but have yet to try it. thanks again

Hi, my vet strongly advised me not to let my cats drink from the toilet. He said they could catch parasites. Bleach is lethal to cats so keep the lid down! However, vet said it's ok if they want to drink from the tub.

I actually laminated little notes that said, "For our cats safety, please put the lid down or you'll be bathing them after they play in the toilet.
" There's actually the little smiley drawn on it. People never forget to put the lid down!

As for clipping kitties nails, I'd search the forums for advice on that. I just held them & clipped them. They got treats as I clipped their nails & once I was done.

The first time I caught Persi doing this first of all I reprimanded myself for leaving the top up and then I ran to his bowl sure I would find it empty. His bowl was full of water. He is also very interested in water left in a pot or pan to soak it so now we have to make sure they are covered too, or of course I suppose we could just go ahead and do the dishes but you have to draw the line somewhere.

I think they like the toilet because it's fresher. You give your cat new water 3 times a day, but I bet you flush the toilet even more often. Also, the big ceramic toilet bowl keeps the water colder.

I cured Prego of drinking from the toilet by getting a pet water fountain.

Our cat is one of those that loves fresh water and won't touch his water dish at all since he discovered the bathroom and utility sink. We're still in the habit of keeping the lid down from having young children in the house so he hasn't discovered that but when we have water running anywhere in the house he is right there with his face in it if he can manage. If we leave a glass on the kitchen table he's into that...and if he can't reach down into it he spills it with his paws.

Finally I got tired of changing the water dish he didn't use and cleaning up the spills (it's in the kitchen) so I just started keeping a glass in the bathroom for him. When we run water in there I fill up his glass and it's working fine.

Blech! Toilets are filthy no matter how often they are cleaned or with what. I wouldn't drink from my toilet so I wouldn't let my cats or dogs either. *shivers*

Put a sign up for yourself in the bathroom to remind you to close the toilet lid.

You might also look into getting "The fountain" drinking well for you cat. It keeps water running through it and it's more fresh than water that has been sitting.

Bones does the same thing. If I clean the fish tank and put the lid down, he's on it like white on rice. He licks the shower when I'm done and likes the water from the toilet. (I keep the lids down now.) Everything, he'll lick it. I can't drink water with out having the glass covered.

What I got him from Christmas last year was a Hagen Cat-It water fountain.

They L O V E it.

Really, love it. Sometimes it dries up and I don't have a chance to clean it. They get all pouty, and then when it does get cleaned, both cats do a dance around your feet. They don't even wait until it's plugged it to dive in.

It comes with a filter and pump which keeps the water moving. It's domed and also has a pond. It's a bit of a pain to clean, but they love it so much, my boyfriend doesn't mind.

My girls only drink flowing or extremely fresh water so I always have to keep the toilet lids down. I also have little signs on the toilets as a reminder. My dog also drinks toilet water, so I have a triple threat.

I got them a water fountain when they were babies which stopped them from chasing me into the bathroom everytime I washed my hands. It worked REALLY well until they came up with a game of "kibble fishing". Paris would go grab a kibble and drop it at the top of the stream to watch it flow down, swirl around and get captured and eaten by Cairo
. That's fine and all until Cairo got bored of the game but Paris didn't
. The kibble clogged up the fountain and dirtied the filter every day, so I had to change strategies.

Now they get their fresh drink in the early morning when Richard showers, around noonish when I shower, and then I fill up the guest bathroom sink with cold water and icecubes and it gives them something to play with for the rest of the day. If they get really thirsty they'll whine at me as they approach their water bowl and drink what's there.

They are spoiled!
