This has been a continuing frustration in one of my classes and I regret not doing this class project by myself. The guy I'm partnered up with is from another country, and although that's not entirely the reason why I'm frustrated, but his difficulty with english is playing a role. Yes, this is on me as the due date for the project proposal snuck up on me and everyone else had a partner except him and I.

I should have known from day 1 when he didn't even know of the project that this would be a disaster.

Anyhoo, as of last week we finally got a topic and emailed it to the professor. It took me 2 weeks to get him to produce ideas (and he was the one that came up with "You email 5 ideas, I'll email 5 ideas and see which ones interest us"). Unfortunately the topic idea was too broad, so this weekend I began looking up ways in which we could narrow the topic down.
He was suppose to meet with the teacher last Thursday, and I couldn't make it because of work. So during class I asked him about it. He forgot about the appointment.

Well tonight the teacher "reminded" us that the 10 minute presentations are next week :jawdrop: Yup...and we don't even have a TOPIC!!!! I emailed him tonight regarding the narrowing of the topic and my ideas, as well as some links, and we'll see.

But I'm also thinking of emailing the professor and telling him what's up. I'm very frustrated with this as now he and I will have to scramble for a presentation. Plus this project is 30% of our grades...I don't want to fail because of him since this is the type of Masters program that you don't want to get Cs and Ds in (well like all, but still you catch my drift).

Thanks, I feel better. I'm going to wait until tomorrow when I see him in class and see if he talks about my email. If not, I'm so going to the professor about this as its total poop!!!

I feel for you. I'm working with a contractor whom I've been told is brilliant and knows product bundling backwards and forwards. But we have a language barrier and now he is asking what is a bundle?

Talk to the professor as soon as possible.

Yes definitely talk to the professor! You shouldn't have to carry the whole thing yourself and have him coast along and get the grade from your work!

Thanks everyone...I'm definitely waiting to give my partner a chance to respond first...since I will see him in class tonight.

I probably will drop a note to the teacher though in either case. More so if I don't get a response from my partner.

I agree with this - my entire undergrad I tried hard to avoid project work, and generally suceeded. As one of the top scorers in class, most people don't like working with me (I have a standard), but often want to anyway (they want the grade I'll get). I'll tell you the truth - I found it easier to work with coasters (the project got done to my standard) than with people who felt that they had to make some sort of contribution. Inevitable grade point drop.

For my MA, only one lecturer wanted group projects - and I told him (discreetly, of course) immediately after he announced it that "I don't work or play well with others". He took my meaning immediately, and I handed all my work in seperately.

That's so unfair!
I have tried to tell profs that and eventually give up trying. They are always emphasizing "teamwork" and how important it is to learn to work with others.
Little do they know though, 90% of the time I somehow got teamed up with the coasters...and threw fits because I would hear "Oh I forgot to do that" or "I will so make it up to you".

Unlike you I don't have a standard, but prefer working with others that are willing to participate. I have worked with more coasters than participants, and didn't mind the coasters, but now that I'm in my BS where grades matter, I don't want someone riding off of me, only to wind up getting the job I wanted in the end. I know that's a dramatic statement, but seeing the program is limited this is just something I don't want.

OK I just emailed the professor, basically asking him what i should do.

I'm also in another group with this guy (and luckily there are 4 others in the group as well). I'm thinking about forwarning the lead of that project too, emphasizing that i hope he does well with this project, but this is the current issues I have with him....I may hold off on that until the ball is rolling with that project though...maybe he'll step up then...
