So I have never had a succesful attempt at baking a potato in the oven. How do you do it? And for how long? I have an average size baking potato?Im craving a baked potato so badly, and I can never get them to be like the ones you get at a resturant. help!

Thanks!

I never cook them in the oven - I always make them in the microwave - I poke holes in it - and push the baked potato button and its awesome!

Microwave is great if you're in a hurry! If I'm cooking a roast or something, I throw the potatoes in for about the last hour to hour and a half, depending on the temperature. I usually "fork" them first, cut a slit to insert butter and then wrap them in foil! An hour at 350 to 400 is perfect usually, depending of course on the size of the potato!

Baking a potato in the oven is very simple.

Put your oven rack in the middle of the oven. Turn the oven on to 350 degrees.

Wash your potato. Take a fork or knife and poke holes through the skin in several places. You do this so that the steam can escape and the potato doesn't explode.

Put the potato on the rack and bake it until it's cooked. You can check for doneness by sticking a knife in. If it's soft in the centre, it's done. If it's hard, cook it more.

Probably 40 minutes for a medium potato.

I usually cook mine in the microwave, but I love the taste of a oven baked potato much better because the skin gets dried out and the inside of the skin gets slightly sweet.

You can also wrap it in aluminum foil to keep it more moist inside.
In the OVEN that is!!!

Im a skin fan so I do it this way...

Pre heat the oven to 350
I poke holes in them with a fork on opposite sides
Rub butter all over them, use unsalted if you want to cut down on salt
I sprinkle, pepper, garlic salt, paprika, janes crazy mix and oregano on the skin
cook for 20-25 minutes right on the rack. I put tinfoil on the bottom of the oven but they don't make much of a mess

Flip over and cook for another 20-25 minutes

Takes a bit longer but they come out perfect and the skin is yummy

I do the same with sweet potato's but dont eat the skin...

I cut them in half and poke some holes in them
same baking as regular potatos maby a tiny bit longer, poke a long fork in should be easy to put in

Cut a X in the ends, plop em on a cutting board and get out the rolling pin then squish.
put em in a dish and add a bit of butter, brown sugar, then some orange juice. Do this to taste, carefull with the orange juice it can overpower everything. mash them up with a masher and they are ready to roll..

Sometimes ill add some walnuts if im in the mood...
