My cats are 6 and 7 and have been living together for over 5 years now. They are both males and they are both fixed.
All of the sudden last month they started fighting really bad, and there was cat hair and blood all over my kitchen. They fight so bad to where we have to keep them spereated at nite and when we are at work.
I dont know what to do. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

If they have gotten along for 5 years and this has just started, the first thing I would do is take them to a vet. There could well be something medical going on with one and he smells different to the other one. That would be my first suggestion. I would also keep them separated until the vet has had a chance to check them.

There is definitely something unusual going on. Cats do sometimes challenge or re-establish the alfa position but with pets that have been together this long it shouldn't go this far. It usually doesn't go much past some hissing and fighting that doesn't draw blood.

I have taken them both to the vet, and gone through hundreds of dollars of blood and urine tests, and everything seems to be medically fine. My vet wants me to take them to a behaviorspecialist that is going to cost well over 500 dollars. Its really just so strange.

I'd take part of that $500 and see another vet for a second opinion.

Maybe they just are'nt going to get along...........it sucks to think that but it might be the only reason for this behavior. If there is that much of an extreme situation, maybe a friend could take in a kitty for a while? Even married couples often seperate when they are trying to work things out.

Are your cats indoor cats? Is there a chance that there is a cat outside that's sending yours into a frenzy? We have a problem with a neighbourhood cat that sits on our living room wondow sill staring in and he sends our girls into fits all the time. They turn on each other any time he's around because they can't get to him.

Has there been any change in the environment? Have you changed anything around, changed food, changed litter boxes/type of litter or anything like that?

Maybe they're just getting old and cranky, and something minor has set one of them off?

Maybe get some Feliway and see if that helps settle them down?
