I have a question about nutritional supplements and whether anyone here uses them?

The reason I am asking is this: one of our two cats is picky and won't eat much. She's not on the healthiest diet right now but we can't seem to switch her over. The more foods I try the less hope I have. But, today I saw a dietary supplement at a Complete Petmart and thought "This might be good" then I though "I'd better ask before I buy"...

Is this a good idea? Or is there a healthy food I can buy that appeals to cats that love junk food? I know it will vary from pet to pet...and I am willing to experiment but I don't have the kind of money that will allow me to find the answer quickly.

Here is what my handbook says:

If you are feeding your cat quality food, you should not need to give him supplements unless your vet recommends it. You can cause a number of health conditions with overdoses of vitamins and minerals. Overdoses are more common than deficiencies.
