Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if its normal for a cat to drink about a cup of water a day, maybe more. My cat is 13 yrs old and just had a check-up but I've noticed that he's drinks more now than he use to. Is this normal?
Thanks

Hi! welcome to TCS

Did you vet do a senior blood panel on your cat? There are a lot of illnesses that can develop as a cat gets older that would result in increased water consumption.

Karen is right.
/ I would take your kitty back into the vet and ask for a diabetes test as well as a few other tests that your vet may recommend

Just an FYI, my Ginger drinks a MINIMUM of 6-8 ounces of water a day, and I'm pleased that she does. This way I know for sure she's getting enough water - I'm always hearing that cats need more water, not less.

She is not diabetic, she's very healthy. She drinks more a day now than she did a year ago - it sounds perfectly normal to me, but if you are concerned, the vet is always the best place to call/go.

Drinking lots of water is also a sign of kidney disease. They need more fluids to flush out toxins. My kitty is 15 and drinks tons of water. She's now being tested for kidney disease.
