My cat drowns her toy--what is up with that?

Our cat, Coconut, has developed a habit of dropping Littykitty (a small beanie cat toy) into her water bowl. If this just happened once, I would chalk it up to chance, but about every other day I come home, Littykitty is being drowned. It's only this toy, and not the little mice toys. Any thoughts on this behavior?

Yep, my ChanKahli and Tammy-Timmy both drop their stuff in the water. Sometimes it is a shock to see this "body" in the water. They just love it.

Most cats do this for some reason. Gizmo usually doesn't get as far as the dish; she leaves her mice toys next to the water bowl. I guess it's a snack 'for later'.

I wondered if it was because they coudn't "see" the water and the toy is a guide to where the water is. Water you know is transparent.

Guess what I woke up to this morning for the first time?

A drowned furry toy mouse in the Drinkwell fountain!!!

I think Ferris has been getting on TCS while I'm at work, looking for ideas about how to have fun while I'm asleep.

My male cat, Willy, used to put his toys not only in the water bowl, but in the toilet if I didn't keep the lid down.
I asked my vet about it once and she said he was "drowning his prey."

There are a couple of "docusoaps" on TV here about daily life at some of the better-known zoos. We watched one today, and they were feeding two tigers. The "prey" was put way up in trees. Both the male and female tigers climbed up and got their food, but the male dragged his over to the pool and dropped it in, then got it out again, shook it, and started to eat. The keeper said that he always washed his food before eating, but the female didn't.

It made me feel better to see that other cats do this. I'm glad she's in touch with her tiger-side! It's just a little freaky to find the corpse in the bowl...
