If it is still pouring in your apartment I would call the fire depeartment to shut off the water maine. You don't need to get sick due to the dampness and the landlady not being there you have to look after the welfare of you and your kitties. I hope you let them know your worried about mould and that if you need to move out durring the repairs that you expect to be compensated. I hope everything works out for you.

Well, you'll never guess....She has been home for hours and hasn't bothered to call me..I left TWO messages..ONE was pretty urgent..and she hasn't even called to let me know she got the messages...The water has stopped, but geez, when the heck is she going to fix this...?

If this happens again, I will lose it.

I'd go up there and have her come down and see what EXACTLY happened. Then have her write up a document stating that none of the damage was your fault, sign and date it so that in the event you decide to move out, she can't keep your deposit for the damage it has caused. I swear she sounds JUST like my former land lord and he was pure scum.
When we( Brad moved in right before we moved out of the apt) moved out, there were at LEAST eight mice living in our apt and more coming daily. It was gross to get up at night and see one or two scamper off the counter top and onto the floor. I called and called to no avail but was blamed for the infestation because my stove was a little dirty after I moved? I can't cook and was suffering from anorexia so I was hardly eating anything and defiantely not over the stove! HMMMMM. So he kept my deposit because of it. Since I didn't know how to go about getting it back, I just gave in and let him have it. Now I do and I'm telling you, don't be a victim. If it means banging over and over on her door until she gets her lazy butt up and answers, so be it. That water could be from anywhere and could make both you and your cats sick. As far as cleaning your apt, she should hire someone to do it ASAP.You shouldn't have to. That's bull. If she tells you to do it yourself, hire someone and give her the bill and tell her to take it off the rent. Be careful and don't give in! Here's some be strong vibes for you. (((VIBES)))

Call the rentals board in your area and complain.

If that doesn't work, call the health department. The water causes mold to grow and you can get direly sick from that.

You can also speak to a lawyer about the legalities of withholding your rent until the problem is fixed. And if any of your stuff is damaged from the water, you can sue her.

That is pretty awful of her not to return your calls. Can you call and report it to someone besides her? I would go up and confront her. This is her responsibility as the "scumlord".

:censor::censor::censor:? She got the messages and didn't do anything? She sounds not only lazy, but stupid. There are some things you fix pronto, if you're interested in your building staying upright. I'm especially surprised because she lives there too. I do know that it's outrageously expensive to have emergency plumbers in on a Sunday, but then again, it's more expensive to not fix things like this till they get so bad the ceiling caves in!
I take it you didn't have to give a deposit anyways, so you don't have to worry about that. But you've still got the right to live in reasonable conditions. This needs to be fixed immediately as there are health concerns. If she hasn't responded by tongiht, you need to look into taking action.

There are many people that are not qualified to call themselves landlords. All they want is the $$$ and never fix anything. I would call the local health dept on her right away as your place with yellow water (ewww) could be hazardous to your health.

The business I work for does emergency mitigation for water damages. If water came through your ceiling, your ceiling got wet. Your walls may be wet as well. Many times drywall will not feel wet to the touch. Professionals have instruments to monitor for moisture and the equipment to dry it. Moisture causes mold. Your LL would do well for herself to take steps ASAP to prevent this.

Drywall is like a petree dish for growing mold. Old buildings with plaster walls are not quite as at risk. Not all mold is harmful to your health, but some forms of mold are deadly. Regardless, mold can spread and destroy structure and contents.

You may want ask your LL to look in the Yellow Pages under "Water Damage Restoration" and find a reputable company to check for moisture and take steps to remove it.

So, she called this morning before I went to work, and said that the overflow in her bathtub is cracked, so the water just comes ito the walls when someone has a bath..well her son thought the thing was fixed and had a bath..and all that water came into my place..

She said she would fix it Thursday and promises noone will have a bath until then...

Thats fine I said as long as theres no more water...there was no damage to my place other than some water that I had to mop up..none of my stuff was damaged so..

I don't know..she's annoying

Sounds like she's planning on fixing her bathtub... but what about your ceiling?

It takes time for wood and drywall to dry out, so they have to remove the wet drywall from your ceiling, leave the area open to dry out for a few weeks before they can repair the ceiling again. I know this because every spring for 8 years I went through that when my bathroom ceiling was leaking due to a leaky roof. I was ticked off at having a gaping hole above my head for weeks and asked the contractor why they don't just fix the ceiling, and it was explained to me the need for the area to completely dry.

Make sure that she's not only planning on fixing her bathtub, but also the damage to her bathroom floor and your ceiling!

I agree she needs to do more that have her family stop taking baths. She could have the framing supporting the ceiling start to rot-what if the whole thing collapses. She need to have a professional plumber come. A cracked overflow on the tub??-I have never heard of this-she must have more problems going on with her tub(I have a nephew who is a plumber pus we have done lots of remodeling) -I wonder if it got overfilled and the water went over the edge of the bathtub?? I would contact Health Dept/Building Inspector. Do you have renter's insurance?? Perhaps they could advise you on who to contact too.

She's making you wait until Thursday? What a heifer! I wouldn't have been so nice- I would have made her fix it tonight or first thing in the morning.

LOL, I am my own renters insurance agent.
Maybe I will call a contractor I deal with tomorrow. Really though the damage doesn't seem all that bad...
