Amitriptyline?

Does anybody know the side effects of Amitriptyline(sp?)? Ophelia is now on it for her "issues". I gave her the 1st pill this am. I noticed her hacking tonight & she puked a little(about 4 hours ago). Just liquid....she ate fine tonight....very vocal as usual since I was late with supper. She's never had a hairball before. Supper hasn't come back up yet, she's racing up & down the hall puffed up as usual chasing Dorian...spat at Damita as usual. Of course, no vets are open until Monday...I'll be keeping an eye on her & if need be, I can make an emergency vet trip(I'd rather not if it's nothing).

Could the puking be stress because of my foster dog(she acutally likes the little bugger!)? Or could it be a side effect of the "crazy pills"?

I would guess it is the medicine. I had a friend who's kitty got a shot of amitriptyline that lasted about a month. I'm going to ask about it when Piglet and Eeyore get spayed. I hope that if they are calm for a month, they will be a little tamer when the med wears off!

amitriptylene is a very bitter nasty pill for cats. my raven was on it for 3-4 months a few years ago. the best way i found to give it, is in empty gel caps (size 3 extra small, usually available at health food stores or places like GNC). then the cat won't taste it and there is none of the vomiting and foaming. we tried having it compounded, but it was so bitter he was suspicious of tuna for weeks after that. all you have to do is get the gel cap a little wet and it slides right down. i also gave him a treat afterwards, so he didn't think it was all bad.

I didn't know it was a bitter nasty pill! I know Ophelia loves peanut butter, so I might use that to give her a pill tomorrow until I can get some pill pockets!

yeah. i found out not from the vet but on the FLUTD yahoo board, and raven's reactions. i think vets should tell owners that. raven would foam & throw up if i didn't get the pill in the exact right spot before we got the gel caps. and when it was compounded it was too bitter to cover the pill taste. the poor kitty. luckily he's not on it anymore, but i'm happy to help others whose cats are on it.
