I grew up in Kansas and it was called pop. When I went in the service everyone said soda and now that I live in Ohio everyone uses soda and that is what I have gotten used to calling it.

Oh, yeah. They were soft drinks when I was growing up; since then the term "pop" has been added, generally when referring to a can of...

"Soda" to me is soda water, aka club soda, that gross stuff that gets added to anything you want to add fizz to, but no flavour.

"Soda" used to mean that lovely ice cream drink, that you got at a "soda fountain", while your neighbour ordered a milkshake that actually had milk in it, or some other ice cream concoction whose final topping did not have hydrogenated oil in it. But now I'm showing my age.
That's it exactly! Used to call them soft drinks, now we call it pop. And soda - what rapunzel said!

I call it pop. But I have moved around the country a few times, so also picked up habits...for instance, although I drink Pepsi, not Coke, I still call any cola Coke. It just doesn't make sense, does it? DH always gets a chuckle at a restaurant when I order Coke, and they ask if Pepsi is ok! LOL!

Pop....Ive heard very few people in Canada refer to it just as soda, I agree with above poster who described soda as just the carbonated part no flavour...club soda. Good for mixed drinks, but I can think what else....
and I agree, a soft drink is anything without alcohol...

TONIC!!!

Wow, looks like I'm alone with this one.

I've always called it tonic, doesn't matter what kind, carbonated drinks are tonic around here. Pop isn't a northern thing, at least not Northeastern - if anyone around here asked for a pop, you'd think they wanted a knuckle sandwich, LOL!!!

I have actually heard people ask others, "what flavor Coke do you want?" My cousins in Illinois call it "pop" and "sodie". ewww.

Taco Bell does that everytime my mom orders a "Coke" (in the south, that's what we call EVERYTHING
) She knows they don't serve coke, but she always says that's what she wants when they take her order...lol.

I say "soda" but everyone here thinks I sound ridiculous because everybody else says "coke"

I'm from Pennsylvania and we call it Pop here.
I have a friend that was born in NY and she calls it soda...when she comes to my house I'll ask her if she wants some pop and she'll say "No, but I'll have a soda"...I always bring her the box of soda that's sitting in the back of the fridge.

This has been going on for years now...everytime she asks for a soda she laughs because she knows what she's going to get

What part of PA are you from? I'm from SE PA (Philly), and I've never heard anybody from around there call it "pop".
