My cat Sinbad is 10 years old and we've had to recently confine him to the indoors because of a flea problem... thinking it was the right thing to do. He is now showing extremely alarming and erratic behavior. At night he is extra hyper and runs through the house, up and down the stairs. And he is on full alert for the smallest noises now. It's to the point where I've begun to think he is going a little crazy. Should I stay persistant by keeping him inside or just give in and let him out.

It may take a while for him to adapt to being indoors, but indoor kitties live longer and safer lives. Be sure you have some good things for him to climb on and scratch on. Also, if your kitty hasn't had a vet visit to check for common senior diseases, like hyperthyroidism, you would want to take him in.

Thanks,

I also looked up Cat Distress Syndrome. The running and staring into space may be caused either by the fleas and his reaction to them or also likely from the pesticide. Now I feel at fault. I dont know if it's the treatment or the stress of keeping him indoors and that upsetting him futher.

This is probably a dumb question, but have you treated him for fleas with a flea medication from your vet? There may also still be fleas in your house so you need to vacuum every day and empty the bag outside the house. Don't EVER put a flea collar on your kitty - they are dangerous and can cause death. The only good use for a flea collar is to cut it up and put pieces in your vacuum to kill the fleas you are vacuuming up.

It's a pain but in order to get rid of the fleas you need to do the above. Also he may be having a bad allergic reaction to the fleas.
