I know it is nearly Bonfire Night, but we have been getting fireworks being set off for almost two weeks now!
I know we've had Eid and Diwali, but still!

They are even setting off big bangers during daylight hours! Surely those things cost the earth, so to set them off when you can't see them is a waste of money? How do they afford so many anyway?

Every year, we get the specialist shops opening up selling the biggest fireworks known to man - where they expect people to let them off, I don't know? The gardens around here are really too small for most of these!

Although I can hope that they will finish after the 5th, I know they will be going on for months after - oh the pain!

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy fireworks but in the right place and at the right time!

Is anyone else getting all the fireworks already?

There you go again with all that foreign language. But I do agree that setting off fireworks all the time is a pain. The Redneck Southern US is not much better for it...

What's Bonfire Night? Eid and Diwali?

I can help with Bonfire Night but must confess i dont know what Eid and Diwalli are Sarah

Here in the Uk we celebrate the fact that Guy Fawkes and a bunch of like minded Catholics failed to blow up the Houses of parliament along with King James 1st.

At the time the catholics were being persecuted, and they..well..got fed up with all the broken promises made that would allow them to practice their religion openly. So a bunch of them got together and plotted against the King James and attempt to destroy government.

They failed and met very gruesome end, traitors were hung, drawn and quatered.....not a pleasant way to go.

So on 5th November fireworks are set off (i assume to imitate the explosion) and a Guy Fawkes stuffed image type thingy is set alight on top of a bonfire. Its a celebration of Parliament surviving the gunpowder, treason and plot.

Eid and Diwali are muslim festivals of Light! Other than that feeble excuse for an explanation, I cant tell you much more!

Sar, we've got the same problem here in Essex! I actually got up last night and shouted out the window like a mad woman until I got at least alittle reprieve from the bangs! To make matters worse, Tony's son Harry stayed the night and he's terrified of the noises so I had to deal with him screaming hysterically every time one went off!

I really hate fireworks!

Diwali is the Hindu festival of light!
Eid al Fitr is Muslim and marks the end of Ramadan

Ugh, you must have had a horrible night of it!
It really is terrible as there are pets and children that are frightened, but do they care?!!

I knew it was something like that and it had something to do with a festival of light!

I'm terrible at remembering my own religion's special days, let alone others!

Geez, you guys don't play around, do you? Drawn and quartered? YIKES!
Nasty way to go, hung until you are not quite dead then having your stomach cut open, and if that doesn't see you off you get chopped into 4 bits.

I'm so with you on this, Sarah! All this sudden racket from nowhere really bothers my girlies. We don't have Bonfire Night, but our equivalent fireworks day would be the 4rth of July. I agree, I can accept them, and maybe even enjoy them on that day. Still, the nuts up and down the beach start setting them off well before the 4rth, and then they continue making all their ruckus sporadically usually through the rest of the Summer. Perhaps this is when they finally use up their supply. Sending peace and quiet your way!

Thank you, Stephanie!

It really is frustrating when all you can do is grin and bear it until they run out

The rain has now picked up and they seem to have stopped for now, so we have some quiet at least! I just wonder if the calm will last long enough for me to pop to the pet shop to buy food!

I agree that they should only be allowed to set fireworks off on specific days! That way we could brace ourselves for it and make sure that our pets are kept calm and safe!

I hate the fireworks around July 4th. They always start up two weeks early and then go for a week after. Lucy gets so upset over it and basically stays in the basement for the whole time. And what is more worrisome is that July is a very dry time here and to have idiots just firing flamable explosives off just anywhere makes me nervous

Oh gosh, I didn't think of that! It must be so scary!

I guess that's one plus that we have in the UK, being that it rains a lot!

I hate that just any old Joe Blog can go and buy fireworks!!
I think they shouldn't be on sale to the general public. You should have to get a permit to buy and set them off. And towns should have their own big fireworks displays (ours does) on the appropriate days, which are accessible to everyone.

I couldn't agree more!

I just find that these shops that open just at this time of year are only in it for the money and think nothing of who or when they sell them to people!

The ironic thing about our area is that two minutes down the road is our community part that would be excellent for a well organised display!

i have no idea what "Bonfire Night" is, but I live about 2 blocks from a major tourist attraction that also has a baseball field. It's also the area they use for major fire works displays. Sometimes it seems like there are fireworks going off almost daily (not really, but sometimes it's so frequent that it seems that way). Fireworks after ball games, after concerts, for holidays and special occasions etc. Plus add individuals who buy fireworks and set them off along the river on their own at all hours of the night, and it can be a bit much.

I know what you mean Sarah - we don't really do Guy Fawkes here but we do do Diwali (Deepavali) and Eid (Aidil Fitri) and god, some of the fireworks can make you jump! The best part is, it is illegal to set of any firewarks (except sparklers) in Malaysia unless you're licensed!
