I think "cat lady" is definitely tattooed on my forehead! Let's just say that I now I 6 foster kittens.
How I went from 1 to 6 in a matter of two hours, I don't know, but it definitely happened. Well, it seems as though Kenzie is going to the shelter tomorrow to be officially placed up for adoption. She has already had several people inquire about her, so hopefully she will have a new home soon.Yea!
In the mean time...I have 6 kittens! Ahhh! How did that happen?
....well, after I feed them all, i'll take some pictures and explaine better. The 5 new kittens are about 5 weeks old and look really well at the moment. They are going to the vet tomorrow to be dewormed and possibly vaccinated. They don't have names at the moment, so i'll take a poll and let everyone help with that.
They are absolutely adorable! There are what looks to be 4 tuxedos and 1 little dilute tabby. I'm not sure about the genders yet- I will look later after they've been feed. All I can say is that I have the most awesome boyfriend ever!!! I called Colin about the situation earlier and i definitely didn't think he'd let me bring them home- but he said "No problem! I can't wait to see them!" Wow! Have I turned him into a cat person or what???
. Oh, and good news, my ringworm seems to be going away, so I called my dermatologist and the vets today to make sure it was ok to bring the new kittens here, and they said no problem
Kenzie's is also almost gone! So she has been cleared to be put up for adoption tomorrow.
Well, i'm off to go feed 6 kittens....and while i'm at it, i should DEFINITELY get my head examined!
I will post pictures later for everyone to see!

Awww! Six babies! I had a foster pup here for all of 4 days. He was stressing Bagheera out to much by just being here.
He was a sweet little bugger though. He was a year old and 8 lbs. Yorkie mix. Now he's with another rescue not the one I normally work with. I checked them out and they were great! They showed me around and we talked for 3 hours before I signed Frisky over to them. They renamed him Buttons though.

Awwww Nikki you are a great foster momma. I cant wait to see the pics on your new fosters. Are you ok about Kenzie? You, Colin and Fosters are going to be sad, but then again there will be 5 other babies running around, too.

Well, i'm a little sad over Kenzie....however though, if people are already showing interest in her and requesting an appointment to see her- that's a pretty good sign. So while I will really miss her, I know that she will find an excellent home soon, so that is comforting me a little bit. Fosters is gonna go crazy without her though
they are best friends. So that is definitely gonna be sad. Fosters just tried to "make friends" with the new kittens and well....it was quite a sight! All 5 of them were hissing at poor Fosters...and Fosters just didn't understand that because Kenzie never hisses at him. I think the new kittens hurt his feelings
my poor pup! I'm sure he will be ok though- Colin and I always spend a lot of time with him...so he will be alright....plus, once the new kittens get used to him, i'm sure they'll be kinder to him.
./ I will be taking Kenzie in tomorrow after my class....i'll be sad, but I'll still have my hands full with the new kittens...so hopefully that will distract me a little bit. I did however talk with the shelter about next week (We have a Black Cat Policy- no black kitties are allowed to be adopted right before Halloween around here for their own safety) So we both agreed that is she isn't adopted this week, she cannot be adopted until after Halloween has passed, just to be on the safe side.
I know she will find an excellent home soon- she's such a good kitty!

Just a little update on the kittens: There is definitely not a problem with their appetites
...those little guys are like walking garbage disposals! They ate soft food, dry food, and drank water and milk!
. So far, it's 4 tuexdo and one grey/black/white tabby. I think it's 1 girl and 4 boys- I will double check that later.
Tomorrow they will be going to the vet for a thorough check up.
I'm about to eat dinner now, so when I get done, I will take some pictures and post their story

What do you mean by them saying no? Do they not put sick kitties into foster homes, or do they not need any foster homes? That is weird. Just about every shelter I know has foster homes lined up for sick/ pregnant/ young kitties when they cannot be housed with other cats. Humm, maybe it's just a Memphis thing though -there are numerous shelters and agencies around here, so they try to get the community really involved in responsible fostering- especially since there is such an overcrowding around here and two of the shelters around here are extremely high kill. Humm..maybe the shelter near you doesn't have a need for new foster homes because they are placing their animals really quickly?

lol, Fosters is laying on the couch looking like he lost his best friend after those kittens hissed at him. He ran off like a scared little pup and hid by me. (imagine a huge dog running away from 5 teensy little hissing kittens
) / I had Kenzie out with him earlier so those two could play for a bit- they're gonna miss each other!

Yes, they do place their animals really quick from what they say.
They said the don't have a need for foster homes. There is one about 2 hours from me that needs them, but I can't drive that far during the winter.
I "think" the really sick ones get PTS!!

As for pregnant moms, they are adopted out as pg.Not sure how it works after they have the kits though.
I know you sign an agreement that you will have them spayed.....Mom's that is.

That's good that they place the animals really quick. You mentioned that you think they put the sick ones to sleep. Do you know what they consider "unsavable" when they have the pts...like what diseases/conditions they have? Sometimes even no-kill shelters will have to euthanize a very terminally ill animal that is in immense pain if all other avenues have been exhausted.

You know, I don't actually know what determines them to be PTS.I know for sure aggresion issues, fear issues, any biting,I would say Cancer, anything terminal.
I just told them that I would like to foster and was told they don't use fosters.I said "I would like to if you ever need/use them".They have my name from the 3 that I adopted from there

Hummm....no kill shelters definitely don't euthanize for aggression and fear issues- they foster the animals out and socialize them slowly. Sounds like that shelter is not a no kill shelter, but instead maybe a low kill shelter. Eithor way, I think it's wonderful that you've rescued 3 lovely babies from there and have provided them with a wonderful forever home
. It is nice that you offered to volunteer your time if you should need you- I hope some day you have the opportunity to- i'm sure you would be excellent at that!

Also, about them adopting out pregnant kitties...that strikes me as odd.... A pregnant mom should remain in a foster home until after the babies are delivered and weaned (then all of them should be spayed/neutered, dewormed and vaccinated before being placed up for adoption)...I've never heard of a shelter doing that. Mainly beause most people do not know how to assist momma kitties should they have a troubled labor or anything of that nature. That is weird that they do that....also, they are assuming that the adoptees will be able to help in the labor and potentially foster the kittens should the momma push them away or they won't nurse properly. That is a lot of risk to assume. i definitely don't see how they get away not using foster homes. Maybe they adopt out the pregnant moms to very experienced cat owners who have knowledge of labor/delivery procedures?
