Has anyone else ever been at an auction and just not been able to keep up with what they were saying!?! We went to the Amish School House Fair today and they were holding 3 or 4 different auctions at once. The first one we came to an Amish man was acting as Auctioneer. After a minute or 2 I could kind of keep up with him. Next was a non-Amish (not sure how to say that) gentleman and I swear he was singing! I mean I was waiting for a banjo to start playing in time with him!
They guy at the farm animal auction was the worst!

The day itself was fun. I just kept standing there staring with my mouth hanging open at some of the quilts. They were fantastically intricate! I think all that the singing auctioneer did all day were these quilts!

The sad part of the day was when we got to the doughnut stand, they were out! My Mom was a nanny for a lady about 10 years ago and befriended the Amish woman who cleaned house for the lady. Mom visited her recently and then told me all about the doughnuts the lady's sister would be helping to make...then they were gone! Not a bad thing for my hips I guess...but I sure wanted one! Guess I have to wait till next year's fair! I need some time to save for one of thoes quilts!!!

Years ago I nearly married into a family of auctioneers. It certainly is an art!

One thing I learned is that you really need to be careful when you are bidding at an auction. Some companies have staff in the audience who make bids in order to drive up the bid if the item isn't getting what they feel it's worth.

The more you go to auctions the better you get at being able to follow what they are saying.

We don't go to as many auctions as we have in the past and have learned who are the "good" one vs bad ones (they have plants in crowd bidding up items!!)
About 30 miles away there is an annual amish quilt auction too. I never have gone and I would probably faint to see the prices.
If you like amish baking you must try whoppee pies!!! They are like mini chocolate cakes filled and covering in white frosting.....

As a kid I went to MANY livestock auctions with my dad. My head would spin
I couldn't keep up if I wanted to. I used to have to ask my dad what they were saying and when he answered me, he would answer as fast as the auctioneer just to confuse me

That's why I lik eEbay!

Oh we have some places to get some fantastic Amish baking around here! Tuesdays and Fridays we have the bazar open. Lots of time we get lunch there. We can get everything from cheeses to fruits and baked goods. You wouldn't believe how packed the place gets! I mean you have the squueze between people to get in our around in there! Plus we have a store here that is owned by a man of 'Amish ancestry' the paper called him once. They have a very nice deli and a baked good section. My Grandmother was fascinated by the place. There are always buggys out and in the spring young Amish boys will sell flowers and things. DH delivers to quite a few Amish homes that have shops. I know a lady who had her cabinets custom made by an Amish gentleman. I would like to get some furniture done that way in a few years. It seems the Amish in our area give a great deal to our community. It's deffinatley an attractive feature to living in this area to me.
