Yesterday we went to our local PetsMart to pick up some cat sand and food. They have a rescue that is always there, called "CLAWS", and I went in to visit the kittens... bad idea! They had a solid black kitten, with big green eyes, and she was a polydactyl kittn!!! I LOVE those cats, have wanted one forever!

But right now, we have four cats, plus a possible fifth on the way. So there is no way I could have adopted her, my s/o would have used a hatchet on my head! LOL

Anyone else here like polydactyl's?

A polydactyl is a cat with extra toes. I have two of them.

I'm going back on Monday, and if she is still there, I'm going to adopt her. I have always wanted a poly cat, and I LOVE black cats, so it must be a sign. I'll have to sneak her in to the house though! LOL

LOL They are fun cats, just a heads-up on something. Their extra claw will sometimes grow in such a way that it will curl back into the pad or other part of the foot, since it is a deformity. We had to have one of Barty's extra dewclaws removed, BUT it was so far up his foot that it was not an invasive procedure, and caused him more pain when he had it normal, then when he got it removed. It was only a little bit of a pad hanging there, and the vet just took the whole thing clean and simple. He bears no weight on it, never has, so it wasn't as horrid as having him declawed. So just wanted you to be aware that this is something that could happen with your poly. I hope you get the royal blackness into the house unseen! LOL

My Peanut is a Polydactal and let me tell you...he uses his little hands like a raccoon....he tends to get into things that are more intricate.

He literally picks things up and brings it up to his view...sometimes he eats that way...Hand to mouth..No kidding.

Peanut is a trip! He's bossy. Sometimes I wish I would have named him "Fingers" or "The Fonz" instead of Peanut because of his mobster-bigshot behavior...<grin>

It's so cute to watch him walk...he looks like a duck.

Oh yes....what Hissy said about that claw...I have to trim Peanut's every month or two, I keep my eye on it because once he did get an infection...that claw grew in a curve and RIGHT through his skin...very painful.

My vet called it a dew claw...due claw..(however it's spelled)

Here's a lovely example:

Was just sitting here petting Polly and playing with his big mitten paws.
Gotta love those polydactyl feet!

I have seen him use his paws to grasp in a way the other cats can't. And he is a climber par excellance on the cat tree; one day I saw him hanging onto the top level upside down, batting a paw at one of his siblings topside.

Kimward, I'm impressed by the paw picture no end!

I've always wanted a polydactyl--I've heard they use their paws like hands and get into everything! If my Tailer were polydactyl I'd been in severe trouble (she can already open up things I have troubles opening).

Anyhow--I hope the little black kitty gets to come home!

LOL!

Show cats over here get disqualified for extra toes, I have had a few cats with this deformity but we have had them removed. Interesting thread though
Happy to hear from other "Poly" lovers

I personally don't find the condition cute, but the cats are

My Max is a poly. He drinks his water by cupping is paw, dipping it in the water and drinking the water from his paw. Oh, I love playing with his paws - they're huge.

Hi and welcome Annie!

i met Oliver, a polydactyl, last Christmas during an SPCA window adoption drive. He was such an affectionate orange tabby!!! He was purring none-stop and was adopted in no time!

Smiles and Cheers from a fellow California!

I love polydactyl's. Just lost mine in October last year to breast cancer and I am devastated. Still crying for her. Would love to find a rescue group now that needs to foster a cat(s) for them. If anyone know of one let me know, thanks.
