I'm new to this board and looking for some advice. My cat, Puck, has just been diagnosed with a UTI (again, she had one about 3 years ago). After a horrific day at the vet (she hissed and growled all day, my husband and I have to take her and put her in and get her out of the cage). She's a completely different cat at the vet. Let's just say, the vet had to put her under brief gas anesthesia to do her exam and get her urine sample.

So, they sent us home with special food and amoxicillin. She has to take 1ml, 2 times a day. Last night was no problem. This morning however, as soon as I got the vial near her mouth, she started smacking her lips together and drooling. Then when I did get some of the drops into her mouth, she starts to really drool. Needless to say, I only got her to take 1/2 of the dosage. My husband tries to hold her in his arms and keep her from getting away, while I try giving her the drops.

Does anyone have tips for ways to get her to take it? I am really concerned about the drooling, as she didn't do it the last time we have to give her the drops (3 years ago). I feel awful for making her have to go through all this.

If anyone has any tips or hints, please share!

Thanks!

I have no answer for you, but my cat, Pippin, also does this. It's highly disturbing!!
To get him to take it, I pin him to the counter top then jam the syringe into the side of his mouth and squirt quickly!! I wish it wasn't so traumatic for him.

My Ellie drools like crazy every time she has to take any meds. I find it is less if I mix the med in a syringe with a little cat/goat milk or egg yolk and water or tuna water. In other words, something that cat likes.

Hi Pucksmum-

Puck is drooling because the liquid tastes bad - cats often drool in response to bad tastes. The lip smacking probably means Puck is anxious since she knows what's coming. (Lip smacking can also indicate nausea).

Ask your vet for amoxy tabs instead of the liquid. Use a pill "gun" to give Puck the pill (available from your vet for about $1-2) - it helps insure the pill goes down the throat and doesn't get caught on the tongue. For any med in pill or capsule form, it's important to follow the medicine with a "chaser" of at least 3-4cc of water to help it go down, and also to wash away any momentary medicinal taste should the pill get caught on the tongue.

Puck should do better with this form of amoxy. Hope this helps and she's over her UTI soon

I usually scruff the neck and inject the liquid from the side of their mouth. If they are being very difficult (like hiding and trying to escape after realizing they are going to be dosed) I use the bag. It comes in very handy for administering meds, examining the head and mouth and cutting nails. I believe I bought mine from Drs Foster & Smith, but you can check out the manufacturer's web site.

This sounds eerily familair! My Trixter doesn't take Omoxycillin anymore when he needs antibiotics because it makes him sick to his tummy. He can just SEE the bottle of pink stuff and he starts the drooling and lip smacking, then he gets a belly ache from it. Antibiotiics do usually cause tummy upsets in him, but some more than others.

My kitten is on antibiotics and starting drooling and lipsmacking from it. I almost died. She was drooling so much I thought she was having a seizure or something! Searched online and found out its normal. It sure is scary to see!

The best thing for holding the cat is to grab a towel, and wrap her like a baby. but put the open end on her back then have your husband sit on the couch and hold her while haveing one hand/arm over your cats leg! it works great!
