Anyone used Metacam before?

Our kitty was having problems this am with staggering and falling, so he went in for tests. Tests came out clean, thank goodness, and the vet is stumped as to a cause for his morning behavior. She gave him a shot of Metacam (anti-inflammatory) to see if that helps, in case he's developing arthritis. She said they've had a lot of luck with the drug and wanted to try it on him. I just did a little research on the drug and found it can cause renal failure and sometimes death in cats. The studies I found didn't sound as positive as my vet did and now I'm worried.

Does anyone have any other information on medicine? I pick him up this evening and am going to take print-outs of the information I found.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

My cat Much has been on Metacam for the last 3 or 4 years for arthritis. We haven't had any problems but like you I'm not always comfortable with the information I have found on it.

But my vet has had several years of experience with it and has not seen problems. It is contra-indicated if the cat does have kidney problems.

She gets one drop each day.

I have used Metacam on 2 cats - Pebbles had it while we were trying different things for her leg, so pretty much a month - although I complained at her having 3 drops a day as I had read the same thing. And Tom had it for his cystitis, his was on and off for about 10 months I think.

Thanks, I feel a bit better, but will be sure to keep a close watch on him for any adverse reactions. I pick him up in a couple hours.

My Callie had one dose of this in the spring and I didn't like the way it affected her. She was irritable and crotchety and slept for about 3 days. I told the vet that I didn't want him to give that to her, except as a last resort and ONLY after talking with me first.

Scully was given a dose after his operation earlier this year - I can't say how it affected him as he was on a mix of meds - but something didn't agree with him in the mixture and we took him off all the meds as soon as we could.

So far he hasn't had another episode and he hasn't had any real effects from the drug. Thanks to all who replied to my question.
