Hello,

How often should I groom my Maine Coon cats??. They get clumps very easily, my neutered male in particular. I have one blue mackerel tabby( 5 year-old female) and one brown mackerel tabby( 4 year-old male).
My female has a bad temper, she gets very angry. but in the beginning when I start grooming she seems very calm.
Thank you!

I grew up with a Maine Coon, and we had to brush him on a daily basis. Also, during the summer months, we had him shaved into a lion cut.

I have an NFC, same coat.
She hates brushing/combing, but I do it daily, for as long as she'll tolerate it, sometimes several times a day just to be sure I get everything.

In the spring as soon as it gets warm she gets sheared (lion cut) and bathed, and she's kept sheared until the middle of september.

I don't own an MC (yet, I holding out for a red tabby) but I do know that they should be combed/brushed daily and bathed every 6-8 weeks or so, if they are not show cats!

If they are matting easily, then groom once a day or at least 3-4 times a week. You need to keep ahead of the mats or you will wind up with a very upset kitty when you do groom!

Combing helps with getting the dead, lose hair out best. I comb and then brush my cats. Also, bathing every 1-2 months helps. I use a conditioning shampoo for cats. My cats don't like being combed or brushed either. So I just do it every day or so for a few short minutes.

I have 2 female nfc's (similar to Maine Coone) and only really need to comb out their back legs and underside of tail once a week, although once summer comes and they shed the winter coat I expect they'll need brushing daily. Its not recommended to bath them as this washes off the natuaral water proof oils on the outer gaurd hairs. In the natural cold habitat they originate from they are what keep them water proof and keep the cold harsh weather out.

every now and then though they do get a bit messy when they do a number 2, so have to clean the bum and tail asap otherwise the walls floor etc get grose art work!!
