Hello there and thanks for admittance to what seems like a very wonderful and informative group. My cat Charlie gave birth today to 6 beautiful and healthy kittens. They are all black. We took Charlie in as a stray about a month ago so we have no idea who the "dad" is lol. Charlie is all black and long haired with some bits of red(small bits) in her coat. All of her kittens seem to be completely black. Does this mean that they will stay all black or is it possible for them to change color after. I kow this sounds like a silly question I am sure, but all 6 black? I just wondered if maybe they arte usually born this color from a black mother and then change to orange, grey, etc lol. Plesae dont laugh me off the board here people. Anyhow, besides that, it was all pretty cool. Momma cat insisted I be there in between chasing around two todlers during her labor. So I was able to help her out with cutting a few of the cords as they came in fast succession, I checked them all out and they appear quite healthy and are all suckling with no cries to be heard. Anyhow, I appreciate you feedback on my question. Thanks.

I don't know about the colour change . I just wanted to say good on you for taking in a pregnant stray and good luck with the kits and have fun. I am eagerly awaiting for my stray Tinkerbell to have her bubs.

Since you do not know what color the dad was...it is possible to have 6 black kittens in a litter. What some people do is put some non-toxic nail polish on one nail of each kitten to tell them apart. Just remember that now is the time to ensure that mom stays indoors only and that you plan to have her spayed once her kittens reach 10-12 weeks of age.

Good for you for taking her in! Genetics are very weird, and yes, it is possible for all the kittens to be black. I know they dont change from black to orange or white, but I believe they can go through less drastic changes. Ive seen black kittens that end up with a red tinge to their coat, but thats about it.

I know when I had my Siamese mix, she had a litter of kittens and all of them were black :-/
