When we were at the emergency vet last night (see other post) I asked the vet his opinion on the best food I could be feeding my two girls. He seemed to think that since weight management is an issue for them, Science Diet WD would work really well. Apparently it's only available at the vet's. But he couldn't say enough good things about it. Curious as to whether or not anyone here has used it.

See the thing is that the vet suggested it as the best food out there and it just so happens to be something you can only get from the vet.

No Science Diet is not a good brand of food. There are so many better choices. Basically do not listen most vets advice on food. They are not nutritionists and often just recommend what they are selling. Like Iams or Purina which are just awful brands of food.

Get a second vet opinion.... Then if the second vet says RX too then maybe try it ... W/D is a extreme formula filled with lots of fiber to push things thru./// for some cats that is great for others it is not nessessary... May I ask what the cats are currently eating and there ages?>??

They're 3 and approx 6-ish (??), currently eating Nutro Indoor Wt. Mgmt. Seem to like it. The 3 y/o Calico puts on weight pretty easily, and my tuxedo kitty (the one at the vet now) is just a BIG cat, not really fat, but rather firm.

Some Science Diet food has been fine for me.
There was the ZD type & it is nasty. None of my cats would touch it.
The one cat had to be on a bland diet or it would get serious diareah.
Don't try the ZD unless its urgent.
Also, if you vet says a cat will not starve themself to death, don't listen!
I have 2 that will starve themselves if they don't get what they want.

My 5 year old has been on WD for 2 years. She's overweight but also needed a low fat diet due to pancreatic problems. She eats dry only and
does fine on it. She's even lost a little weight. I personally don't like the ingredients but the formula works for my cat and that's all that matters.
Vets recommend Science Diet prescription foods because they know what
works and doesn't work. The WD is a fairly low carb food compared to some of the over the counter weight control foods like Nutro or Iams or Wellness.

I have two cats that eat this type of food. Both are male cats with histories of urinary blockages. One in a large cat, not fat, but large. The vet wants them both to eat this food to control their weight. It is working for them. One has been two years and the other a year with no problems. I am not sure about the ingredients, but my cats are doing well and that is important to me. In fact that is all that matters. They only eat the dry food, nothing else, no cheating.
