I'm hoping to be getting a pomeranian when I graduate. I know I posted earlier about getting a poodle, but I ended up falling in love with poms. Plus, I think a pom would be a lot easier for me since I'll be moving after I graduate. Anyways, I'm hopefully getting a pom for graduation. Does anyone have a pomeranian? Any advice? Post pictures if you have any! Please?

Hi,

A friend of mine has a Pomeranian and she is the cutest thing! So dainty and princess like! And not yappy which can occur with the breed (especially if untrained!)
However, they are a breed popular with backyard breeders, puppy mills and pet stores, so its important to be informed as to where to get a healthy and well bred puppy..

Here are two links to differentiate where and where NOT to get a purebred dog (one is from the American Pomeranian Club site)
(IE, You don't want to get one from the paper, from a pet store or from other suspect sources).

THe best thing to do is to first research the breed and the best place to do that is with your local Pomeranian club (if there isn't one local to you, then there is usually an email address of a contact with the club). They will be MORE than happy to steer you in the right direction of a reputable breeder!
Here is the link to the regional clubs in the US...

Or have you thought about rescue? There are many small dog rescues out there! and you save a dog's life...Here are some links to small breed rescue in your area...

These groups have small dogs available for adoption, pure breeds and mixed. Most are in foster homes and photos are posted on their web sites. For a specific breed also check the breed list below.

Congratulations! I personally hink poodles are easier to handle, but Poms are SO adorable. If you like the look of the pom I suggest spending some extra cash and getting one from a reputable breeder. Poms are suposed to be teeny tiny, but backyard breeders are notorious for producing 15 pound dogs, and im one to believe that if a breed is supposed to be a certain size, that is what I want.

There is a HUGE difference between a BYB pom and a well bred one. Good luck with your search!

Thanks a lot for the info/links! I would really like to rescue a pom, so I'll see what I can find out. I'm excited!

Poms are cute little things but like any other small dog.....difficult to train at times. A poodle on the other hand, smart as a whip. Very very intelligent animals always eager to please. I would probably do the same thing as you....get the cutest one lol

I agree that a poodle would probably be easier to train, but I'm not too sure how big of a place I'll be living in, and I don't want to have a bigger dog if I'm in a small place. I think a tiny dog would be easier to have than a big dog if i do have a small place. I will have a poodle someday, though.. both poodles and poms.

Check Petfinders for poms

Poms are "big" dogs in little bodies. Originally they were about the size of sled dogs but were downsized over time (read that in a breed book). Most poms I know are yappers so you might have some barking problems. They are fiesty little dogs

I'd get a few books out of the library on the breed and some basic obedience/training books.

You could get a toy poodle, they are very small.... Poms are very cute, but every one I've ever met has been mean
I think they look like little foxes
maybe that's why they don't like me
good luck with your puppy search!
