I wonder is you could inquire at the vet's office how far a cat that has bee poisoned could travel with the poison in its system. I remember that un-nuetered males have a 1 square mile romaing area so this could be a wide territory.
None of your other neighbors have outside cats. I'm just wondering if this has happened since you moved in. Also the people that used the rat poison before do they use it year round or just certain times of the year.
This is quite puzzling and a liitle bit sinister.

Good questions, and ones I will take up. Thanks Gail. It definitely seems to be since I goth ere in that everyone says there have never been dead cats around before. But I cannot believe that any of my neighbours would do this deliberately - they have all been so welcoming of me and admire the cats.

Could somebody who formerly put rodent poison "below ground" now be using it "above ground" out of pure convenience? Has anybody started using a new pesticide? What about oral rabies vaccine for foxes? As I understand it, it was developed in France, and has been used for about two decades there, as it has been here - has there been any sort of "vaccination drive" in your area lately? Has your vet noticed any increase in FIP in the region? We're pretty far away from you, by European standards, but FIP is definitely on the increase here, so much so that the "iffy" vaccine has become standard in our county, as there seems to be a "mutant form" around here that is killing cats in droves.
Jenny, I'm beginning to think that the only way you'll have any peace of mind is to build an enclosure out of chicken wire for your babies, so that they can enjoy the outdoors while being fairly safe.

I couldn't agree more.

You and all of the animals in your area are in my thoughts Jenny.
I really like the idea of a cat enclosure...
what do you think?

I know - I have been talking to my gardener about it. But the problem is that it would not keep poisoned mice out - they would get into whatever we built, if they are around. I have been looking it up and mice and rats have a home territory of up to 100 metres. So that would include at least two of the nearest houses. I really don't know of any changes - my neighbours say they have only used the poison in their attic, as they always have. I am going to get my well water tested - it feeds a pond and leaks a bit to some puddles, so it is possible that something has died in it. I don't use the water at the moment for anything but I will want to, for the ponies, so it must be checked. Meanwhile the cats stay inside. They are now all being treated for a UTI - the peeing became too much and now they are on antibiotics. Obviously they are stressed out, poor things. But it has improved dramatically in the last 24 hours.

Oh Jenny, this is horrible. I hope that you get to the bottom of this. As horrible as this sounds, I hope that it was only something that Napoleon did out of just not being able to know, because at least then your other darlings would be safe. Good luck with the Mayor and keep us posted.

Jenny, this makes no sense. I am glad you are going to talk to the mayor tomorrow....hopefully it can be figured out! Poor kitties lost their best bud & now they have to stay indoors all the time... I'll keep all you kitties, ferals, too, in my thoughts.

I agree - there has to be something else going on! Having your well water tested makes a lot of sense.

Did you ever find out to whom the black and white kitty belonged?

What a terrible situation! My heart goes out to all with cats in your area, and I sure hope the Mayor can provide more help and insight!!!!!!!!!!!

(((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))

The meeting with the Mayor went well - he was horrified and will take it up. He didn't have any immediate suggestions but thought maybe one of the farmers might have put something down like poisoned meat against foxes, though it is illegal to do so. But he said that because of that it might be difficult to get straight answers. But he said too that the hunt wouldn't do that because of their dogs. He is thinking of putting out a circular letter to all members of the larger commune (equivalent of the parish) to point out the dangers of poison, and he will have a quiet word in as many ears as he can. He also said that whoever has done it might stop as soon as they know the Mayor is watching the situation. The Deputy Mayor, who is building a new house two fields over from mine, said that he and his wife are going to get two cats as soon as they move in, so he has an interest in finding out what is happening. When I got back the farmer across from the bottom of my field was out there with his dogs, and I went and spoke to him. He also said he knew of no poison and as a hunter and an 'ecologue' he would never use it, that it was an unsporting and evil thing to do. So I am no further ahead but the word is spreading and I guess that is the best I can hope for right now. No sign of the barn cats and the food is still there, so I fear the worst.
