Hello Everyone. On 10/10/06, my little boy, Sebastian, broke his arm. A cable box fell on him. Trust me I feel bad enough without anyone telling me what a bad mommy I am. He had a computed fracture of his ulna and he broke his radius. He is ok now. Luckily, a surgeon was able to manually put the bones back together. At first glance they were going to put a rod and pins in his arm. He has a heavy fiberglass cast on now. My problem is he needs to be confined to a cage or crate for 3 weeks. Even with a severely broken arm, he jumped from the floor to the top of the refrigerator. I have tried to make the crate as comfortable as possible. But, all that he wants to do is get up high and hide. I bought him an orthopedic bed, a low-lipped litter box and raised his food so, he does not and he cannot bend down. I put his brother in for a few minutes at a time to help sebastian not feel lonely. Has anyone else been in this situation? What did you do?

Do you have an area of his cage/crate in which he can hide? Maybe with a blanket over that area or a part of a cutout box sitting inside to give him a little hideaway.

If you haven't read this thread it might give you some ideas' or at least a little comfort about your poor baby.

We all know how our fur-kids are able to get in trouble. I can't imagine anyone even thinking of lecturing.

I hope your little guy heals quickly.
Loving & healing vibes to you both!

Thank you so much Tru. I did not even think to make a hiding spot for him in the crate.

I am sorry that I was on edge when implied that I would get a lecture. I have not slept well since Tuesday and a lady in Petco told me "You have to be careful, cause look what happened"

Thank you again!

Not to worry, I don't think anyone was offended. I certainly wasn't.

Maybe you should have stepped on the ladys' toe and told her she should have been careful, "Look What Happened!"

Wouldn't dream of giving you a lecture - esp as you did the responsible thing, went to the vets, had everything sorted. The only thing that puzzles me is that he is jumping when he is crated?? It really is vital that he is kept in the crate, and if you let him out, it is very strictly supervised so that he cannot possible do things like that, or the break wont heal and you may be facing amputation. You can buy crates that are big enough to fit everything in them - I cover the toilet end of them so that they feel happy using it. Another tip is to keep an eye on that leg when he gets older - one of mine had been hit by a car when younger, and it was pinned, and it did cause arthritis (as well as other issues, but that's not normal!!), so something to watch for.

Thank you all for your understanding. The "Crate" is actually an animal pen, that I put in my living room. I put a sheet on top and secured it with clips all around. I can make it any size needed and adjust it so his litter box is far enough from his food and bed. My husband calls it a little studio apartment with maid service. I have found that if I put his brother in with him when I can not be with him, he stays calm and does not climb the bars. And, if I need to be away (shower, laundry, take and get my daughter off the bus) I put him in his carrier. I was sleeping in shifts so that he would not become too restless. I am sure all of you can understand that he slept with me every night possible for 15 years, so he just wanted his mommies attention when he was caged. We have a routine now and he seems less restless. But, he will try to jump if given the chance. I also bought him a heated bed, so he stays warmer. I think that may have also been a problem with the weather getting colders in the North. Thank you all so much for your help and concern. My next problem is his culture came back postive for strep. But, the dr. said that the antibiotic would help with it.

Thankfully, no pins. They did a manual reduction and put a fibergalss cast on him. He already has arthritis, so I am prepared for some cat phycial theraphy afterwards. I know that when I was younger and broke a bone in my foot it too me about 2 weeks to walk without my ankle hurting from being in the same postion for 6 weeks.

Thank you all again!
