I live in a two-family house, but we only have one boiler to heat both apartments and the thermostat is in mine. So, with the temp predicted to go below freezing last night and a high of only 45 today, I asked my downstairs neighbor if she was ready for me to turn on the heat. She wants to hold out for a while longer (to save money), so our apartments our freezing!
(Yes, I could just turn it on, but I'm trying to respect my neighbor's wishes.)

Fortunately, I've got some sweet, furry friends to cuddle with and keep cozy.
I offered to loan my neighbor a couple, but she didn't take me up on it. Her loss.

So, if it's cold where you are, have you turned the heat on yet? Can me and the kitties come and stay with you?

No...

My furnace isn't working so my landlord is supposed to be by today....I am worried that he will let my cats out (so I left him a note) and/or that Lovey will not let him do any work due to hissing at him and trying to scare him away (he is my big man)...Rocky will undoubtedly hide...

I am soooooooo hoping its nice and toasty when I get home and I don't have to wear a sweater, a blanket and two pairs of socks anymore in my own house!!

You poor thing at the mercy of your neighbour like that! You are more than kind!

We've had our heat on for almost 2 weeks! We're wimps

We just got a brand new furnace & all new ducts in our house plus we bought a (new to us) woodburning stove but it's not fully hooked up- hopefully this weekend...

The previous owners took the stove they had when they were evicted! So we had to get a new one!! Hopefully it helps with our heating bill though.

Anyway- our house is nice and toasty so you're welcome to come join us!

while it is getting chilly down here, it hasn't gotten hot enough for me to have to use the heat. might change this weekend... but you're welcome either way - it'll be warmer than where you're at!

We've had it on a few times the last three weeks. I hold out until mid-September just "out of principle" (I'm from Texas) because you don't turn the heat on in the Summer! Heck, we used to run the air conditioner so we could have a fire in the fireplace on Christmas Eve!

But we live just off the shore in the Pacific Northwest, and the air from the ocean is chilly, even in Summer. It rarely goes above 70 F degrees (21 C) in the summer and summer days in the 50's F (13 C) are common at this house! I finally know what a "summer sweater" is. Never understood that growing up in Texas!

Cheers, from

We haven't turned out heat on yet...even though it's freezing outside
We live in an apartment and are lucky enough to be a few floors up....I guess were getting all the heat from the people below us because it's nice and cozy in here!

Last year I was in an apartment on the third floor... I had the cheapest heating bills ever because I only turned mine on every once in a while... There was even a time I had to turn on my AC because everyone below me was cooking me out!

I turned mine on last night, even with all my kitties it still too cold! but I turned it off again before I left for work this morning, my electric bill was only 42.27 last month! I'd like to see another really low one like that.... and I'd love to have you Eileen, but my place would burst if added 4 more cats and a person

It's supposed to get down to the low 70's this weekend. Burrrrrrr! I might have to turn on my space heater this weekend, when it chills down to the 60's at night.

We don't have control of the thermostat -- it's in the downstairs (rear) tenant's apartment. For a girl from Ottawa she must be really thin-blooded, because she's had the heat on for a couple of weeks now; fat lot of good it does us, though, because it barely warms our apartment up at all. I've already changed over our bed to the winter sheets, though, and I'm considering digging out the heater and electric blanket, but I think I'll wait until the snow's actually sticking around. I don't want to start thinking it's cold now when I know it's going to be way colder in a couple of months!

Now that would be an interesting thread!

Thanks guys! It's good to know the kitties and I have some other options if my neighbor doesn't give in soon!

Eileen I'd buy a space heater. Yrs ago when I was still single I rented the upstairs of a house and the lower tenant never turned the heat high enough-we had a weird kind of stove thingy but it never heated the bedrooms verywell hence the space heater (only when I was in the room).
As we have electric heat we haven't changed it over from the manual settings yet in the rooms. I have started a fire in the woodstove though but this time of year you can cook yourself out of the house -last nite was pretty warm!! The family room is pretty toasty and the cats sleep down there instead of on the bed (ok by me more room!!) We have unlimited free firewood we just have to cut it down and cut it/split it and haul it home!!
