Need advice about adopting a lab

My fiance and I are considering adopting a lab, or at least fostering one to see how it goes. The thing is, we have two adult cats with no real experience with dogs. Etain is 9 years old, she's a sweetheart to people, but doesn't seem to have much use for other animals, at least not for her adopted brother, Midir (who is too frisky for her) or the neighborhood cats who have the nerve to step foot on her front porch. The thing is, it seems like she's just gotten grumpy in her old age, when she was young, maybe a year or two old, she used to love the neighborhood cats, she'd sit in the window sill and they'd meow at each other half the afternoon, having little kitty conversations (that was in Florida, so we're not talking about the same cat here). Now she hisses, growls and generally gets freaked out when she sees another cat outside. She also does this if Midir tries to play with her. She's just not a playful cat, she also seems to be a little jealous and territorial. This doesn't bother Midir, he just antagonizes her anyway
but they've learned to co-exist, and they're civil and very occassionally sweet to one another when she's not trying to get him to leave her alone. Midir is about 5 years old. He is a sweetie, but he likes to play rough. They're both spoiled rotten and used to getting tons of attention and running the household.

Anyway, we chose labs because they are said to be good with other animals and highly trainable, and the fiance just loves labs and really wants a big dog. I like labs just fine, and would be happy to have one ... but I love all cats and dogs. Well, I joined a forum for labrador owners and things were looking good until I found a few threads about labs who have seriously injured or killed cats. Seems that some labs get really wound up and their prey drive kicks in if they've been chasing something, even if it's a cat that they normally love to cuddle with. This isn't really a lab thing, it's a dog thing. But it's got me freaked out. I know that you can work with the dog by keeping him on a leash inside and teaching him the "leave it" or "no kitty" command when they start to chase. But I'm really worried about safety. I would not be able to live with myself if one of my babies got hurt because I created an unsafe situation by bringing a dog into the house.

I know that an awful lot of this depends on the individual dog. I also know that a trustworthy, well trained dog can get worked up and hurt or kill another animal just with their sheer size and strength, whether it was their intention or not. Well I'm just babbling. But I'm really not sure what to do. I would love to about hear any experience you dog owners, especially lab owners have had with your cats, positive or negative. Any and all advice is welcome. I just need more information from people who love their cats as much as I do. The advice on the dog forums is more like, "the cat will figure out how to take care of themselves" .. that's just not good enough for me. I wouldn't expose my dog or my cats to danger if it can be helped. I also don't want to make my kitties miserable. I would rather deprive myself of having a dog than turn them into stressed out, nervous wrecks. I want a dog, but I want it to be a positive and safe addition to the household for everyone on two legs or four.

In your shoes, I think I would sign up with a breed rescue to foster labs who are known to be ok around cats.
Do that for a while to get your cats used to it.
Chances are, you'll have that special foster come along that you simply can't live without

No room here, but that is exactly what I plan on doing in the future, only difference is that my breed of choice is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

first of all, let me say thanks so much for choosing to adopt.
labs are GREAT, GREAT dogs! I have 2. Rocky the black lab I have will be 10 next month and Jenny my rottie/yellow lab mix will be 9 in April. they are really great family dogs, imo and yes, they are highly trainable and smart. If you want a laid back lab, adopt an older one. they have LOTS of energy and need lots of exercise. if you want a younger one, just know what you're getting yourself into and yes, finding one that is good with cats or a puppy that can be raised with your cats

..make sure they have been tested with cats BEFORE you adopt one..you wouldn't want to bring the dog back, because they said the dog is good with cats and comes home and is horrible with them. just ask them just so you know to test the dog with cats before he/she leaves the shelter.
my two are wonderful with cats, although Jenny pesters them sometimes.
I couldn't imagine myself without a lab. they have always been my favorite breed.

good luck on your search!

We have a lab (rescued from abuse) and she's fine with cats - she likes them better then dogs. When we got her, she just got done with puppies (accidental) and she kinda mothered the kittens we had at the time. Ling was raised with her and Spooky never had been with dogs in his life - but he was fine with her.

I'd look into the lab rescue groups (there's a very good one in Las Vegas and they will provide transporation to forever homes outside the state). They can find the right lab to go with your cats.

I belong to a lab message board (one of the best on the nets). Some in the group started the Las Vegas Lab Rescue and several members have adopted from them.

I have 2 dogs, and one happens to be a lab mix, and 6 cat's. We have been very lucky I think that any cat, or even other dog that has been brought into the house, everyone co-exsists happily. Jack, our youngest cat(6 months) sleeps with Lady all the time.

Cats and dogs really are natural enemies, so reading that a dog attacked a cat isn't that uncommon, but it just so happened you read about labs attacking cats. This could happen with any dog though, so remember that. I would definately look into offering a foster home to a young adult rather than a puppy because well, any of us who have or had dogs during this stage know what a hand-full a puppy can be, and since you do have an older cat, I would aim for a dog that isn't so much a puppy anymore. And definately look for a dog that has been associated with cats in the past.

The only thing you can do is try. If everything works out, great, but if not, you still have your lovely kitties. I wish you tons of luck in finding the perfect little pup for your family.

Thank you. This is actually the forum that I've been reading. I am working with a lab rescue in Michigan, we've discussed the possibility of fostering, and they have been able to put me in touch with another cat lover who adopted a lab so that she can share her experiences with me, we're going to chat this weekend. I hadn't really thought about having a dog shipped. Though it would be wonderful if it was a perfect match, I think that given our situation we should probably foster a dog before comitting 100%.

I'm glad to hear of so many positive experiences with labs. I suppose nothing is guaranteed, but I just want to know what I'm getting myself into

By the way, my current dog is half lab, great with our cats, very protective of them, but he still has a strong prey drive, any outside cat that runs, he will chase if he's able.

Active, yet very even tempered, and a great watch dog (loud mouth
).

Keno won't really chase the cats in the house, but she will outside. The cats learned quickly that if they stop, roll over and stay still, then the dog gets confused and bored.

But we would not allow her to chase them - she did get repremaned and told to stop.

Fostering sounds good - that way you can try the dog and if it works out fine, adopt them.

I'd be more leary of keeping some of the terrier breeds with cats rather then the larger dogs.
