Hehe I think I have lots of Smudge update posts. If I just put a post onto an old thread, everyone might not see it

So she's back "home" with us. The watery eyes are due to a congenital defect - she either has a second row of eyelashes, or her eyelashes are growing down or something like that. The vet gave me the name, but it was long and technical....

So they're most probably going to have to do surgery on her eyes (just the "eyebrow" I think??) to correct it since the eyelashes are basically touching her eyeball and causing irritation and it will only get worse. Apparently her eyes are a bit cloudy because of this, so have to give her ointment twice a day every day for a while.

But they want to do the eye surgery the same time she gets spayed rather than knocking her out twice, but her eyeballs and eye sockets are a bit too small still for such a delicate surgery, and she was still only 1 lb 14 oz, so they said they may wait up to another 4 weeks before they do everything.

Poor little baby
On the plus side, we get to keep her a bit longer... I hope Lily doesn't get TOO attached!

I think it's too late for Lily already. She seems to really like having a little kitten around to play with, judging from the videos.

I hope she gets big enough for her surgeries, and I think it's wonderful that your shelter is taking care of it all for her. She really is a lucky little kitty-baby!

Oh yeah, it's wonderful that they won't release her until she's completely healthy! That's what I like about them. It'd be easy to just release her as is and let someone else deal with it.

Heidi, thanks for all of your support and good wishes, we appreciate it!

Oh Smudge- poor baby.
I hope both surgeries go well when the right time comes. You'll really have trouble giving her up when she's ready to go to her forever home.

While I have it in my head that she has a good meowmy who wants to adopt her, it's fine.

But if she decides she wants another cat sooner, or doesn't want to risk a kitten with eye problems (she already has a deaf cat), and I don't find someone else, then it'll be hard!

Oh I am so glad it's something that can be corrected.

Is the condition called Entropion - It's where the eye-lashes come in contact with the surface of the eye. I think Shar Peis sometimes need this type of surgery.

We have a shelter cat with herpes here & after all he's been through, he had the same thing! Poor guy had surgery yesterday. I will see him tonight & I can ask how things went, etc for you sarah!

Is a date set yet for the surgeries?

Thanks, that'd be great if you could let me know how he goes, and how he goes recovery wise.

Smudge is still too small, so they'll just play it by ear. They think she should be big enough in 3-4 weeks to get it done.

Smudge went back to the shelter today for a weigh in and shots, and yes - the condition is called Entropion. Apparently it's more common is dogs, if it is in cats, it's more common in purebreds with flatter faces such as Persians, more common in older cats - it developes as they get older, and it's more commonly the lower eyelid.

Smudge is a non-flat faced, non-purebred, young kitten with it on her upper eyelid. She's just a rare kinda kitten obviously

She weighed in at 2lb, 2.5oz, so is definitely getting bigger. Her future meowmy and kitty brother are desperately waiting to adopt her, so hopefully she'll get her corrective eye surgery before too long.

I forgot to tell you what I found out about the Entropian eye surgery on the shelter kitty here. Sorry... Anyways, Madison has 2 stitches on the outside of his eye. It now looks normal. His foster meowmy has been putting terramycin ointment in his eye 2x a day to keep the stitches moist. He was back to being his usual "nightmarish" kitten self the day afte rhis surgery & kept on trying to get his stitches out....

Oh that's great, thanks for letting me know!! Smudge HATES eye ointment. I'm supposed to be putting it in her eyes 2 x a day at the moment, but I just cannot do it. Even with 2 of us holding her she squirms away and moves her head too much.

I'm glad it sounds "relatively" easy and he recovered fast! I'll let his future meowmy know...

Aw Smudge.
That is soo cool that someone is waiting so anxiously to adopt her. They should start coming on TCS now, LOL. So we know them. I can't remember if it was you I told, but little Dumpling was only

11 ounces at 6 weeks
1 pound 2 ounces at 8 weeks.

So it sounds like Smudge is doing great!

my sister's dog has this, & had to have the surgery twice, because it didn't take the first time. then the dog pulled out her stitches the 2nd time.... they've had a rough time with her! [her name's Montana]. my sister jokingly refers to it as Montana's 'facelift'.
