Never actually met one until this weekend. I was up in Putney, VT, eating some ribs at a place called Curtis' BBQ - it's a big old blue schoolbus out in the woods where they grill up some yummy ribs and chicken.
After eating lunch, I took a walk around near the back of Curtis' property, enjoying the fresh air and the view, and saw from way across a field a black long haired cat with the yellowest eyes I've ever seen - they literally glowed bright yellow at me from all the way across this grassy field!
So of course, I started calling at the kitty, who promply started to meow at me and came running right over to say hi - he was SO friendly, I was a bit amazed! Normally my experience with "strays" is that they keep strangers at a bit of a distance!
I think he is a barn cat - he was WAY too friendly to be feral, but he was in pretty rough shape. Lots of mats in his fur, his once VERY fluffy tail looked chewed up and mangy. He was not a giant cat, but he had a big skull and the largest paws I have ever seen on a short-legged kitty. He was (or would be, if he was cleaned) glossy black with a dark grey belly, and he was just BEGGING for loves and scritches!
So of course I obliged him!
He rolled in joy, showing me his belly, but I learned fast that belly rubs were not a good idea with him, as he went for my wrist with both paws and would have nipped me if I hadn't gone quickly from his belly to back behind the ears.
Every time I stopped scritching him, he'd walk around me in a circle, rubbing and rubbing against my riding boots, so of course I fell in love and spent a bit more time communing with him, bending over to give him some more scritches.
That's when I noticed it - a looooong strand of drool hanging off one corner of his mouth! I said, "Euw!" and started laughing, because I'd read about drooly kitties here on TCS, and realized he was beside himself with happiness getting this unexpected love from a total stranger!
So I petted and scritched him until I heard my friends getting their riding gear together, and knew it was time to go. I said goodbye to him, and he was so cute - he walked me back to my friends, running right beside me until just before we got to the parking lot where the Harleys were.
I'll carry the memory of this little guy with me forever - he was so sweet and friendly. I wasn't able to tell if he was neutered or not. My guess is that he is still intact, and I felt badly for him, as one that loving shouldn't be forced to live outside, but then again, he sure wasn't starving as he was nicely plump and his coat was shiny, although quite matted. Living in the woods behind a BBQ restaurant probably gives him quite the pickings!
Wish I could have taken him home...have the best life you can, little drooler! I'll miss you....
