loss of appetite

my cat was in the hospital for 3 days taking anitibiotics and came home and took anitibiotics for 8 days and hasnt been eating or drink for most of the time. The docter said he had a virus but, still gave him anitibiotics. Does anyone know if anitibiotics make cats not want to eat and drink and if you do know how long does it take for them to get back to normal eating and drinking habbits?

I would call the vet and ask if there is anything you can do to help your cat eat again. They may prescribe an appetite stimulant or give you tips on syringe feeding. What were your kitty's symptoms? If he had/has a stuffed up nose, then he may not be able to smell the food. You may want to try warming up the food a little to make it smell more strongly too. It is very important that your kitty eats.

Amoxicillin can lessen appetite's, but it seems to have been a long time - the vet can prescribe an appetite stimulant (just a daub of jelly on his tongue daily) to help while he's recovering, but he'll do that faster if he's not weak from lack of food!

You also don't want your cat developing Fatty Liver Disease (Hepatic Lipidosis) which can happen if your cat is eating much less than normal for a couple of weeks:

My kittens did loose a little of their appetites when they were on amoxycillin. I added a probiotic (Benebac, found at vet offices and pet stores) to their food and fed them that at least an hour after their meds. It helped.

Since your cat is having a more severe problem, it's probably best to call the vet. Maybe he needs to be on a different antibiotic that he would tolerate better.
