I have a collection of Barbies, the real nice ones that have designer gowns and such. Helen, I see your $250 (done that a few times!
) and raise you to $615 that I paid on Ebay for Bob Mackie's Empress Bride It was a steal when I bought her, before the Collector's market died.

Unfortunately, none of the local stores carry the real collector's Barbies anymore.
TRU and FAO used to, but they closed almost all of the TRU stores, and FAO only has their flagship store now.

Oh! Which Mackies do you have? I mostly have the older ones, just because we ran out of money for collectibles. I have Queen of Hearts, Sun Goddess, Moon Goddess, Empress Bride, Papillon, and I think that's all. I used to have Asian Goddess and Madame du Barbie, but had to sell them when we were really desperate for money.

I don't collect, but my mother did.
I used to get her the Happy Holidays Editions till they discontinued them.
I also bought her the repro of the original Barbie (Midge I think her name was?).

We were all heartbroken when she discovered their storage space had rats which ate all her Barbies' heads

Some Barbie trivia:

Barbie's full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts. Saw that in the newspaper.

For a couple of years Mom and I had the magazine Barbie Bazaar. Mom was looking for inspiration for outfits for the great-nieces and I was in major nostalgia mode. Almost all my outfits were handmade and I sooooooo wanted store bought ones!

One year Mom was in the hospital for a week or so and took one of my dolls and yarn, etc., so she could work on Christmas gifts. The nurses found out and several would come in on their break and play with the doll and dresses.

So, yes, I have gone looking at Barbies in the store! (Hate the ones meant to look like Bratz Dolls
)

Barbie and Ken were named for the children of the woman who came up with the doll - which was based on a German doll - Bild Lili.

All you collectors: Remember to keep your dolls in boxes or their value seriously depreciates....I always hate to have to keep items in boxes but it really does reduce their value greatly if they are taken out...

(I always think of Toy Story 2 when I say that...and the "Grandpa doll" waddling around in his box.)

Several years ago there was an auction and one collectible was a prototype torso and the breasts had nipples! That really would have gone over good.

Well as I am 49 I still have "my " Barbie!!! The wedding dress too. I also have Skipper. My sis got Midge and whatever her daughter's name is!!! So I wonder how old I was when I got her-had to be around 1964 or so. Mom also made some dresses and knit one for them too!! Too bad I don't have those patterns!!
When people come over with little girls-I do not let them play with them!! (even though they were well played with my me & sis!!)

I had the Dream House!

I loved it too. With the pink elevator that would come off track and send Barbie and her friends flying through the room

But to be honest, I was more into G.I. Joe and Legos
I was and am a tomboy
I think that's why God gave me boys. I wouldn't know what to do with a little girl

My mom still has my all my Barbies and My Little Ponies. She kept them in hopes I'd have a little girl

Now, it's funnier that you could possibly imagine.
I didn't have Barbie either. I had Tammy. Barbie was too expensive. Later on I had some of Barbie's friends. (This was late 60's - early 70's)

Have you heard about Divorce Barbie?
She comes with all Ken's stuff.
