Hello All!
I came here to tell my tale and hope that people will respond to my cry of help. Last month, I rescued a abused cat that was suffering from a gaping hole under his arm and a big scratch along his neck. He also was suffering from worms and had a fever of over a 102 degrees. He was previously owned by my own father who left his ex-gf and that cat among other animals. I then planned on providing this cat with my home in time, meantime, after treating him at a vets office, a friend of mine with 2 other cats gladly took him in for me.
As it happens, she now finds she can no longer keep him due to the cats spraying everywhere. He is a male, 10 years old and sweet as can be and he seems to be spraying, causing her male cat to spray as well. Now, poor Chasta needs to find a home.
This is breaking my heart because I have 3 cats of my own, 2 are males. Knowing this, I now see that he cannot live in a house with another cat at all. But what can I do?
I need some questions to be answered by other cat people who know their stuff:
1. What other reason would this cat spray if not over territory?
2. What can I do to prevent Chasta from having to be put to sleep because I cannot find anyone to take him....also he is a 10 year old cat.
3. Does anyone know of any rescue organizations I can possibly to turn to?
This is breaking my heart. Chasta cannot go back to where he was... ill-fed, worms, fleas, and being a outdoor cat. I cannot willing send him back to see him dead from being hit by a car or severely injured by something or someone.
I feel if I cannot find him a place to help me adopt him out, I will need to euthanize him even though I can't handle the thought right now.
Everything has gone so wrong...
If you have an advice, let me know. Please!
Thanks,
Jen

Hi Jen-

1. What other reason would this cat spray if not over territory?

Male cats will spray if not neutered, if they are ill, if they wish to mark their territory against others. They will go back every three days to the same site to refresh the scent.
I would suggest a vet visit to rule out any medical reason first and foremost.

2. What can I do to prevent Chasta from having to be put to sleep because I cannot find anyone to take him....also he is a 10 year old cat.

There is a thread stuck at the top of the Behaviour Forum about inappropriate peeing problems, perhaps your answer lies there?

3. Does anyone know of any rescue organizations I can possibly to turn to?

There is a link for you below.

Again I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get him to a vet and make sure there is not a medical reason for him to do this. I also hope you visit the other forum and look up that one thread. Good luck!

Jen, You were so kind to take that poor cat to the vet. Hissy has given you excellent information. After checking the links and thread she has recommended, I feel certain you will have a better idea of what you can do to help him.
When I read this, it reminded me of a post called "Ugly" about a cat so scarred and abused by life that no one would touch him until he was dying. That's when the writer of the original story discovered he was extremely loving. (I know that Chasta is not ugly, but he has been somewhat scarred by life, and might face euthanasia.) Those of us who read it were greatly touched by the story. I pray that Chasta will find a permanent home with someone with a loving heart. I assume he's neutered. If not, as Hissy told you, that would be a key to the reason for spraying. Please keep us informed.

Hello all! This is Jen. Thank you for your replies. Currently, I have asked my friend who has him to make a vet appointment. On the contrary, Chasta is neutured and has been for quite a while. However, if he had peed at my father's house, it may be a behavior that cannot be broken. Also, it could be from stress that he is not getting along with her other cats. I do want to rule out the medical. Thank you for the suggestion about the rescue programs. I can only hope that I can find someone to take him for me. At this point, all of my family members own cats and that makes it impossible for him to go in another home like that. I just hope I can find some place for him. I'm really sick about this whole thing, I have a pit in my stomach knowing he may be facing euthanasia.

Jen
